Canada Week at Boise State Features Speech by Canadian Ambassador
to U.S., Offers Variety of Events
Boise State University’s Canadian Studies Program presents the sixth annual
Canada Week April 2-6. The weeklong event is aimed at a better understanding of
Canadian commerce, politics, public policy and culture, as well as the
U.S.-Canada relationship. Canada Week features an address by the Canadian
Ambassador to the U.S., a full-length film, presentations by Canadian speakers
on the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, border security, urban planning and more. Events
are held on the Boise State University campus and are free and open to the
public unless otherwise noted.
The United States and Canada share the longest undefended border in the world
(5,500 miles). Canada is the United States’ top trading partner (and Idaho’s No.
2 trading partner) and its largest supplier of energy (crude oil, natural gas,
electricity). The Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit and Windsor,
Ontario, carries more trade each year than any other border crossing in the
world.
The schedule is as follows:
April 2
• Canada Pancake Breakfast. 7:30-9:30 a.m., Boise State University Quad
(in front of the Administration Building).
• Canadian Trivia Contest. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Student Union Building.
• Examining Canadian Domestic and Foreign Politics: Process, Power and
Policies. 2:30-4 p.m. Student Union Barnwell Room. Presented by political
science professors Ross Burkhart and Lori Hausegger, co-directors of Boise
State’s Canadian Studies program.
• 10 Years of 2010: Maximizing the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic
Winter Games Opportunities. 7-9 p.m. Student Union Barnwell Room. Presented
by Ray LeBlond, Vancouver 2010 Speaker’s Bureau and corporate communication
director for Tourism BC. Free parking in the Student Union visitor lot.
April 3
• Canadian Natural Resource History and Policy: Environmental and Cross
Border Implications. 10-11:30 a.m. Student Union Hatch AB Ballroom.
Presented by Les Alm, Boise State professor of public policy and administration,
and Lisa Brady, Boise State professor of history.
April 4
• Vancouver 2010: Opportunities for Partnership and Profit. 10-11 a.m.
Student Union Farnsworth Room. With Brian Krieger, executive director of the
Vancouver 2010 Commerce Center. Sponsored by the Idaho Department of Commerce

• Ambassador Michael Wilson Luncheon Address. 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Student Union Jordan Ballroom. $25. Register online through the Boise Metro

Commerce, Idaho Department of Commerce and Labor and Boise State.
• Border Security: The Canadian-U.S. Border, An Integrated Approach. 7-9
p.m. Student Union Barnwell Room. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Warren
Coons, director of the Integrated Border Enforcement Team, and Charles Sears,
assistant chief of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. Free parking available in the
Student Union visitor lot.
April 5
• The Canadian Fur Trade: Past Practices and Current Controversies.
10-11:30 a.m. Student Union Forum. Presented by Boise State professor of history
Barton Barbour.
• Planning, Growth and Development: The Vancouver and Calgary Experience.
3-5 p.m. Engineering and Technology Building, Room 110. Presented by urban
planners Glen Radway, City of Calgary, and John Madden, City of Vancouver.
Issues include sustainable growth, public transit issues, Olympic planning,
affordability of housing and more.
April 6
• “Project Canada”. 7 p.m. Multipurpose Classroom Building, Room 101
(next to the parking garage). This full-length film is followed by questions and
answers with filmmaker Johnathan McFarlane and a travel discussion with
expatriates.
