This Week at Boise State
The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of
March 18-24. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated
information on all events, visit

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
March: Women’s History Month. Celebrate Women’s History Month during
March at Boise State. Events include a film festival, musical performances,
speakers, an art exhibit and more. For a full list of events, visit

March 19-23: Cesar Chavez Week. Join the Boise State Cultural Center in
recognizing Cesar Chavez Week. Chavez organized farm workers and fought against
unfair working conditions and low wages. He led strikes, boycotts and marches to
bring attention to the plight of the farm worker. Events at Boise State include
a peace rally, film screening and presentations. For more information, call

EXHIBITIONS:
Through March 30: “Women’s History Month Juried Art Exhibition.” Student
Union Gallery. Open 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. This exhibition displays various art
mediums from women artists from around the country. The art was selected by
jurors Laurie Blakeslee, Julie Clemons and Jennie Myers. Free. Call 426-1223.
Through March 24: Works by Yukiya Takakita. Gallery One, Liberal Arts
Building. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed
Sundays and university holidays. Takakita is the president of Nagoya Zokei
University of Art and Design in Japan. He also will present a free lecture at 6
p.m. March 8 in Room 106 of the Liberal Arts Building. Free. Call 426-3994.
Through March 24: MFA Thesis Exhibition. Gallery Two, the Hemingway
Center. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed
Sundays and university holidays. This exhibition features Angela Katona-Batchelor’s
“The Body Paradox,” Marlow Hoffman’s “If I Could Just …” and Ralph Polasky’s “A
Dystopian Dialogue with the Happy Hardcore Misfit Toys.” Free. Call 426-3994.
SUNDAY, MARCH 18
Symphony Orchestra. Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m. The Boise State
University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Craig Purdy, will give an
all-Respighi concert. James Lyon, a faculty member at Pennsylvania State
University, will be the guest violinist. Tickets $5 general, $3 for seniors and
free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.
MONDAY, MARCH 19
Safer Spring Break. Student Union Building, Quad, Boise West Campus. 8
a.m.-5 p.m. Visit interactive booth displays to receive free giveaways and learn
about responsible drinking, safer sex and sun safety. Presented by Boise State
Health, Wellness and Counseling Services. Free. Call 426-1459.
Cesar Chavez Week: Peace Rally. Outdoor amphitheater by Albertsons
Library. 10 a.m. March will end at the Idaho State Capitol Building for more
speakers, featuring Carlos Montes with the organization Latinos Against the War.
Co-sponsored by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA). Free. Call

The Virgin Mary in History and Art. Student Union Lookout Room. 7-9 p.m.
Lisa McClain and Rena Vandewater will examine the historical Mary, the symbolic
Mary and how what Mary represents has changed and continues to change over time.

TUESDAY, MARCH 20
Cesar Chavez Week: Grass Roots Organizing Workshop. Student Union
Alexander Room. Noon. Find out how Cesar Chavez organized his followers into
United Farm Workers (UFW). Carlos Montes, a 1960s and ‘70s organizer, will
conduct the workshop, which is open to all who are interested. Free. Call

Buying a Lie: Body Image Secrets Victoria Won’t Tell You. Special Events
Center. 7 p.m. During this presentation, women are invited to discover that
beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors and cannot be obtained through an
airbrush. Sponsored by Chi Alpha, Boise State Health, Wellness and Counseling
Services and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Free. Call 426-1459.
“Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida.” Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Verdi’s
operatic tale of a love triangle between the would-be leader of ancient Egypt,
the daughter of a pharaoh and an enslaved Nubian princess has been updated
courtesy of Elton John and Tim Rice. This event also takes place March 21 and
22. Tickets, $25-$46, are available through Select-a-Seat. Call 426-1494.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21
Ian Clarke. Morrison Center Recital Hall. Master class: 2:30-4:30 p.m.;
recital at 7:30 p.m. Clarke, British flutist and composer, will perform his own
music and other works. The Boise State flute choir will play with him during the
evening concert. Tickets $5, free with student ID. Call 426-1617.
COBE Career Connections Job Fair. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 3-7 p.m.
The College of Business and Economics presents job information booths, a
networking reception and more during the job fair. Dress is business casual.

Rock Rescue. Student Recreation Center. 6-9 p.m. This clinic focuses on
potential emergency situations that can arise during climbing activities.

Cesar Chavez Week: “From the Fields to the Classroom.” Student Union
Bishop Barnwell Room. 6:30 p.m. Students and professionals who came from a farm
working background will discuss their journeys. Free. Call 426-5950.
THURSDAY, MARCH 22
Returning Women’s Discussion Group luncheon. Women’s Center. 11:30
a.m.-1:30 p.m. All women students and staff are invited to attend these
every-other-week discussion groups. Free. Call 426-4259.
Cesar Chavez Week: Film Screening of “Wetback.” Student Union Lookout
Room. 5:30 p.m. Watch a screening of the movie “Wetback,” a documentary that
follows the footsteps of immigrants traveling from Nicaragua to the United
States. On their journeys, they encounter gangs and vigilantes, as well as
border patrol. Free. Call 426-5950.
“Night at the Museum.” Special Events Center. 7 and 9 p.m. Boise State
Student Programs Board presents this film for family night. The film is rated
PG. This film also will be shown March 23. Tickets $1 for public, free for Boise
State students with ID and their families. Call 426-3835.

Seven Arrows Powwow. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Noon. Join the Boise
State University Intertribal Native Council in the 14th Annual Powwow, which
will include all-age dance competitions, a drum group competition and more. This
event also takes place April 1. General admission tickets $5. For more

MONDAY, APRIL 2
Boise State dinner to honor Jim Weatherby. Student Union Jordan Ballroom.
6 p.m. The dinner will raise funds to provide financial assistance to students
entering the master of public administration program and honor Weatherby’s many
years of service to the university and community. Tickets are $100 per person or
$1,000 for a reserved table for eight. Deadline for reservations is March 19.

TUESDAY, APRIL 3
Infant Massage Workshop. Student Union Farnsworth Room. 6:30-8:30 p.m. In
this workshop, parents and caregivers will learn the art of infant massage
through guided instruction. Registration cost is $15, including instructional
