Boise State Students to Volunteer in Arizona for Spring Break
Alternative 2007
Rather than taking a typical spring break trip, 18 Boise State University
students will volunteer their vacation time as part of Boise State Volunteer
Services Board’s Spring Break Alternative trip. The students will spend March
23-31 in Window Rock Ariz., the capital of the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation.
Students will volunteer with the non-profit organizations St. Michael’s
Association for Special Education (SMASE) and the Tohatchi Boys and Girls Club.
Volunteers will help clean up the SMASE facility by painting, doing yard work
and other outdoor labor. At the Tohatchi Boys and Girls Club, volunteers will
lead activities for the youth, offer a presentation on college preparation for
high school students and have a family potluck.
“Our group of 18 dedicated Boise State students has been planning, organizing
and preparing this volunteer trip since last October,” said Brett Berning, the
trip’s coordinator. Berning noted that each participant raised his or her own
funds for the trip.
Berning said the group is still seeking small food or in-kind donations. To
donate, send food or monetary donations to Volunteer Services Board, 1910
University Drive, Boise, ID 83725-1335.
For more information about the trip, contact Berning at 426-4240.
