Boise State Names Business Dean Howard Smith Vice President for
University Advancement
Howard L. Smith, dean of the College of Business and Economics at Boise State
University, has been named vice president for University Advancement.
Boise State President Bob Kustra said as the university was about to begin a
national search to fill this position, it became clear that Smith was perfect
for the job.
“While working on a number of fundraising opportunities, Howard demonstrated
again and again a unique combination of vision, organizational skills and ease
with donors,” Kustra said. “I am confident that his familiarity with the campus,
commitment to our strategic goals and thorough understanding of the corporate
and donor community will assure his success, as well as that of our upcoming
comprehensive campaign.”
Smith will begin his new duties immediately, while continuing to serve as dean
of the College of Business and Economics until May 1. At that time, COBE
associate dean, Diane Schooley-Pettis, will take over as interim dean. Smith
will remain actively involved with the COBE dean’s office, especially in
relation to external affairs and fundraising, until the search for a new dean is
completed.
“What a wonderful opportunity this is to work with all of the Boise State family
– alumni, Foundation, administrators, faculty, staff, students and community –
as this great university evolves toward a metropolitan research university of
distinction under President Kustra’s leadership,” Smith said.
Smith will replace Rika Clement who has served as interim vice president for
Advancement since June 2006. Clement will return to her duties as executive
director of campaigns in the Advancement office.
As vice president of University Advancement, Smith will oversee the Boise State
Foundation, Alumni, the Bronco Athletic Association, and the Office of
Communications and Marketing. A non-profit Idaho organization, the Boise State
University Foundation is the official fund-raising organization that also serves
as the custodian for donations to the university. It was established in 1964 to
raise and manage private funds for the university and its constituents.
The Council for Advancement and Support of Education honored the Foundation with
a 2006 CASE-WealthEngine Award for Education Fund Raising. The Foundation has
just had its two best fund-raising years to date, bringing in $15.6 million
during the 2006 fiscal year and $18.9 million in 2005.
During Smith’s deanship in the College of Business and Economics, the Micron
Technology Foundation made a $12.5 million contribution toward a new business
building.
Prior to joining Boise State in June 2006, Smith served as dean of the Anderson
Schools of Management and School of Public Administration at the University of
New Mexico for 10 years and associate dean for four years before returning to
the UNM faculty and serving as director of the Anderson Schools’ Program for
Creative Enterprise.
During his tenure as dean at the University of New Mexico, he increased the
Schools of Management endowment five-fold, increased tenured-track faculty
teaching productivity while reducing teaching loads, and led the school to be
considered one of the top business schools in the nation. He is also a
recognized scholar in the areas of health-care finance and health-systems
management.
