Basque Studies Conference April 20-22 at Boise State

The Boise State University Basque Studies Center and the Idaho Basque community have joined to present an educational, festive and commemorative conference April 20-22. People of Basque descent were among some of the earliest settlers in the Western United States and have been key to the development of Idaho. The International Basque Studies Conference, which includes a memorial tribute to longtime Treasure Valley musician Jimmy Jausoro, is open to the public. All events are free and will move between the Special Events Center on the Boise State campus and the Basque Block on Grove Street unless otherwise noted.

April 20
• Consortium formation meeting. 1 p.m., Student Union Forum.
• Ibon Mendibelzua Madariaga, keynote address. 6 p.m. Special Events Center. A delegate of the Basque Country in Brussels, Madariaga will speak on “The Basque Country within the European Union Today.” A question and answer session will follow.

April 21
• Conference Paper Panel I: 9 a.m. Student Union Forum.
• Conference Paper Panel II: 1 p.m. Student Union Forum.
• Rev. Alec Reid, keynote address. 3:30 p.m. Special Events Center. Reid, director of the Redemptorist Peace Ministry and facilitator in peace talks with Northern Ireland and the Basque Country, will speak on “Peacemaking in the Basque Country.” A question and answer session will follow.
• Basque tribute and public dance. 8 p.m. Basque Center, 601 W. Grove St. $5 entry fee.

April 22:
Basque community memorial tribute to Jimmy Jausoro. Jausoro was known for his contributions to Basque culture in Idaho. In 1957, he started the Jim Jausoro Band with some friends, and for years provided musical accompaniment to the Oinkari Basque Dancers.
• Memorial Basque mass. 1 p.m. St. Paul’s Catholic Center, 1915 University Drive.
• Tribute performance. 3 p.m. Special Events Center.
• Reception. 5 p.m. Basque Center, 601 W. Grove St.

The conference is sponsored by Boise State University, The Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies, Boise Euzkaldunak Inc., and the Basque Museum and Cultural Center.
