This Week at Boise State
The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
April 2-6: Canada Week. Boise State University’s Canadian Studies Program
presents this weeklong event aimed at a better understanding of Canadian
commerce, politics, public policy and culture, as well as the U.S.-Canada
relationship. Canada Week features an address by the Canadian Ambassador to the
U.S., a full-length film, presentations by Canadian speakers on the 2010
Vancouver Olympics, border security, urban planning and more. For a full list of

April 4-7: Gene Harris Jazz Festival. The 10th annual Gene Harris Jazz
Festival will honor the legacy of the late piano great with an all-star concert

Canada Week: 10 Years of 2010: Maximizing the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and

Presented by Ray LeBlond, Vancouver 2010 Speaker’s Bureau and corporate

TUESDAY, APRIL 3
“Roll With It” Kickoff Celebration. Student Recreation Center Patio.10
a.m.-2 p.m. Boise State students, faculty and staff are invited to use
alternative transportation at least 16 times between April 3 and May 1 as part
of the Alternative Transportation Challenge. The kickoff celebration features
live music, instructional sessions and more. Free. Call 426-1131.
Infant Massage Workshop. Student Union Farnsworth Room. 6:30-8:30 p.m. In this
workshop, parents and caregivers will learn the art of infant massage through
guided instruction. Registration is $15, including instructional materials.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4
Jamie Walker. Liberal Arts Building Room 150. 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Ceramics
artist Jamie Walker will give a workshop featuring lectures and demonstrations,
including wheel throwing and hand building methods. This workshop is funded by
the “Clay and Fire Sale.” Free to Boise State students, faculty and staff and

“Bio-archaeology in Mayan Archaeology.” Multipurpose Classroom Building Room
207. 2:40 p.m. Anthropologist Vera Tiesler will speak as part of the Boise State
University’s Department of Anthropology Lecture Series. Tiesler will discuss the
use of biocultural information such as head-shaping, dental decoration, and
indicators of human sacrifice to decipher the Mayan archaeological record. Free.

Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Club Night. Bands play in several different

Basic Bike Repair Clinic. Student Recreation Center Patio. 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
A trained mechanic will be on hand to give technical advice, help with minor
adjustments and do preventive maintenance. This event will be held every

Fettuccine Forum. Rose Room, 718 W. Idaho Street. Doors open at 5 p.m.;
presentation 5:30 p.m. Artist Karen Bubb will speak on “Boise’s Urban Artscape”
as part of the Fettuccine Forum lecture series. Bubb’s presentation will include
an artists’ panel with Ward Hooper, Kerry Moosman and Elizabeth Wolf, who will
each speak briefly about their own work and involvement in the public arts

SPB film: ‘Disturbia.’ Special Events Center. 7 p.m. Student Programs
Board presents a special advanced screening of “Disturbia,” a thriller that will
be released theatrically April 13. This film is rated PG-13. Free tickets are

Gene Harris Jazz Festival: Big Band Night. Qwest Arena. 7:30 p.m.
Featuring the Roger Kellaway Trio and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Kellaway
has played with everyone from Elvis to the Beatles to Yo Yo Ma and was the music
director for “Under the Sea,” the Bobby Darin biopic. Grammy winner Gordon
Goodwin has one of the best big bands in the world, made up of some of the top
studio players in Los Angeles. Band members Eric Marienthal and Andy Martin have
been featured soloists at previous festivals. Tickets $22 general admission, $44

FRIDAY, APRIL 6
‘Berenstain Bears on Stage.’ Morrison Center. 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Presented by ENCORE! Series, this musical is made up of scenes from the five
best-selling Berenstain Bear books by Stan and Jan Berenstain: “Messy Room,”
“Get in a Fight,” “Double Dare,” “New Baby” and “Stage Fright.” Tickets are $6
for adults and $4 for students. One complimentary chaperone ticket will be

MFA Reading Series. Liberal Arts Building, Room 106. 7:30 p.m. Poet Karen
Volkman will present a reading. Volkman is the author of “Spar,” winner of the

Tribute Jam to Gene Harris. Qwest Arena. 7:30 p.m. A group of great jazz
artists played with Gene Harris over the years and are celebrating his life with
a tribute jam. Featuring world-renowned trumpeter Jon Faddis; Niki Haris, Gene’s
daughter and jazz/pop vocalist; Ron Eschete, who played guitar for more than 20
years with Gene; Paul Tillotson, Gene’s protégé; Paul Kreibich, who played drums
with Gene; and the Cannonball Coltrane Project, which will act as the core band

Boise Schools Career Fair. Taco Bell Arena. 10 a.m. The Boise Metro
Chamber of Commerce and area businesses sponsor the career fair, which shows
students the myriad of career choices that await them in the “real world.” The
fair will also educate students on how to select and achieve career goals. Free.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11
“A Buddhist History of the United States.” Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30
p.m. Presented by the Boise State University Theatre Arts Department, professor
Phil Atlakson creates a bold and radical restaging of events in American
history, utilizing the performance and conventions of the Noh drama of Japan.
This event will also take place April 12-14 and 18-21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 14,
15 and 21 at 2 p.m. Mature audiences only. Tickets are $12 general admission,
$10 non-Boise State students, seniors, Boise State alumni and military.

Eleanor Moty. Student Union Farnsworth Room. 6 p.m. Artist Eleanor Moty
will present the lecture “Works: Past and Present” as part of the Arts Metals
Visiting Artists Series. She will also present the workshop “Bench Tips for
Metalsmiths” from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 14 in the Boise State Art Metals Studio,

“Fearless.” Special Events Center. 8 p.m. Idaho Dance Theatre presents a
modern dance concert of entirely new works by four choreographers: Carl Rowe,
Marla Hansen, Yurek Hansen and Kaelen O’Shea. The concert includes a work of new
music by composer David Earnest, performed by two cellists. This event also
takes place at 8 p.m. April 13 and 14 and at 2 p.m. April 15. Tickets are $25

Percussion Festival. Morrison Center, Room B125, C125, Morrison Center
Recital Hall. All day Friday, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. College and university
percussion ensembles from the Northwest perform in a non-competitive setting.
The Friday concert features the Boise State Percussion Ensemble and the Verde
Percussion Group; the Saturday concert features faculty members and artistic

Cultural Center presents this writing workshop where writers can share their

Health and Human Performance Club Fun Run/Walk. Meet in front of the
Kinesiology Building. 8:30 a.m. Start the spring right with a community event to
bring students and their families and friends together to benefit the Boise
State Kinesiology Department. Route for the 5K or 10k run/walk will be along the
Greenbelt. Free T-shirt and raffle prizes will be available for participants.

BSU Volunteers. Student Union Brava! Stage. 9 a.m. Boise State University

Risk Awareness Workshops. Student Union Lookout Room. Workshop 1 9
a.m.-noon; workshop 2 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sensei Pon Ithathirath of Boise’s Dragon
Bushido Karate Dojo teaches karate to students of all ages, as well as self-defense
classes, and Muay Thai kickboxing. Participants will learn to think and react to
situations of danger with strangers and acquaintances. The morning workshop is
for women and their daughters over age 12 together; the afternoon workshop is
