Learn More About Alternative Transportation During Boise State's Annual Bicycle Congress

Boise State University invites the community to learn more about alternative transportation during the annual Bicycle Congress from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. April 20 in the Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room.

The Bicycle Congress was formed to address issues such as roadway congestion, air quality, alternative transportation routes, and commuter well-being. This year’s conference includes national and international experts. All sessions are free and open to the public, and an RSVP is requested by e-mailing bicyclecongress@boisestate.edu.

• 8:30-9:30 a.m.: “Adaptive Signal Timing for Bicyles.” How can traffic detection and signal timing measures best interact so that bicyclists can clear intersections safely? Led by Ananth Prasad, a traffic engineer for Santa Clara County, Calif.

• 9:45-10:45 a.m.: “Bike Lanes and Car Doors.” What safety treatments can be applied where bike lanes adjoin parallel parking? Dustin White, bicycle facility engineer for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, will lead this discussion.

• 11 a.m.-noon: “The Bicycle Makes the Eyes Smile.” A study in medical anthropology of older Italian cyclists, including their well-being and the importance of a cycling community in the lifelong pursuit of sport. Led by Elizabeth Whitaker of California Polytechnic State University and of the University of Bologna, Italy.

• 1:30-2:30 p.m.: “Campus Circulation Planning.” Guidance for colleges and universities attempting to encourage pedestrian and bicycle travel. Led by Colleen Mitchell, transportation planner for the Toole Design Group.

• 2:45-3:45 p.m.: “School Trips.” Led by Jessica Greene, University of Oregon.
