Children with HIV/AIDS Visit Boise State with 'Journey of Hope'
Program
Children living with HIV/AIDS will share their stories at Boise State University
during the “Journey of Hope” program at 7 p.m. April 17 in the Student Union
Special Events Center. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Camp Heartland, a summer camp for young people with HIV/AIDS, started “Journey
of Hope AIDS Awareness Program” in the mid-1990s as a way for children and teens
to speak out about the issues impacting families affected by HIV/AIDS. The
program is presented around the nation, and children share their stories through
poetry, song, dance, skits and more.
The main goal is to connect with the audience members, and a question-and-answer
session will follow the presentation. Each presentation focuses on five main
messages: AIDS is preventable, HIV/AIDS is not transmitted casually, all people
with HIV/AIDS deserve compassion, people should be empathetic and people should
get tested for HIV.
Student Programs Board Annual Event Coordinator Devin Borland said the program
will give another face to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Student Programs Board, the
Associated Students of Boise State University, Student Activities, the Pre-Med
Club and the Cultural Center are sponsoring the program.
