Fiesta Bowl Proceeds Fund Boise State's New Presidential
Scholarship Program; Deadline May 11
Revenue from the appearance of Boise State University’s football team in the
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is funding a new academic scholarship program for
first-year, in-state students entering Boise State in fall 2007, university
officials announced today.
Known as the Presidential Civic Leadership Scholarship, Boise State is offering
30 renewable scholarships annually, based on academics and civic involvement.
They will be awarded at two levels with different criteria and award amounts.
Twelve students will receive Presidential Civic Leadership Scholarships in the
Blue Circle, valued at $5,200 annually. The Orange Circle will have 18 honorees
receiving $3,000 scholarships annually.
The scholarship application deadline for the fall 2007 semester is May 11.
Interested students should contact the Office of Financial Aid at (208) 426-1664
or apply online at
http://financialaid.boisestate.edu/scholarships/PresidentCivicLeadershipScholarship.htm.
Applications for any of Boise State’s Presidential Civic Leadership Scholarships
must include an academic transcript, two recommendations, a 600-1,200 word
essay, and a portfolio outlining the applicant’s resume of civic engagement
activities. The essay topic for this fall’s application is The Future of Civic
Engagement in Idaho: How I Can Affect Change and Increase Participation.
“The success of our football program and the support of Bronco nation have
translated into funding for 30 new academic scholarships next fall,” said Bob
Kustra, president of Boise State University. “We are excited to announce a
scholarship program that places significant importance on developing the civic
responsibility of our students who will be this state’s future leaders in
business, science, education and all walks of life.”
“The program encourages students to become more engaged in the civic process
through volunteering, internships, clerkships, service-learning and other
activities,” Kustra said. “It is also designed to provide specific training in
civic leadership and build cohorts of students outside of their fields of
study.”
Boise State University is making an annual investment of $116,400 for the
Presidential Civic Leadership Scholarship program. After four years, the overall
commitment for the university at today’s tuition and fees would be about
$465,600 for a group of 120 students overall.
Merchandise sales of licensed Bronco gear from the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is
funding the new scholarship program. For example, the Boise State Bookstore
recorded its best month ever for insignia merchandise in December with $752,000
in sales. The Bookstore shipped online merchandise sales to all 50 states. Boise
State currently has achieved its highest ranking -- 44th -- in royalties among
schools represented by the Collegiate Licensing Company.
The Blue Circle scholarships include fully paid tuition and fees for eight
semesters and a stipend for books and supplies. The estimated value over four
years is $20,800. Criteria for Idaho residents and recent high school graduates
or home-schooled students to apply include a 4.0 grade point average and ACT
score of 27 or higher.
The Orange Circle features $1,500 scholarships toward tuition and fees for eight
semesters, with a four-year value of $12,000. Criteria for Idaho residents and
recent high school graduates or home-schooled students to apply include a 3.5
grade point average and ACT score of 25 or higher.
Eligible participants must be accepted as a full-time student at Boise State and
complete the intent to enroll card. Once enrolled, scholarship recipients must
maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the Blue Circle and 3.0 for the
Orange Circle, have active participation in at least one civic organization and
participate in the annual civic leadership program on campus for the
Presidential Civic Leadership Scholarship to be renewed.
