EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
April 11-21: “A Buddhist History of the United States.” Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. Presented by the Boise State University Theatre Arts Department, professor Phil Atlakson creates a bold and radical restaging of events in American history, utilizing the performance and conventions of the Noh drama of Japan. This event will also take place April 12-14 and 18-21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 14, 15 and 21 at 2 p.m. Mature audiences only. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 non-Boise State students, seniors, Boise State alumni and military. Full-time Boise State students, faculty and staff may pick up one free ticket with ID at the Student Union Info Desk. Call 426-3957.

April 13-May 1: “Yield: BFA Thesis Exhibition.”
Visual Arts Center Gallery 1, Liberal Arts Building and Gallery 2, Hemingway Center. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sundays and university holidays. “Yield” features the works of 14 graduating students studying graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, art metals and mixed media. MONDAY, APRIL 9
“Reverse Discrimination: Fact or Fiction?” Cultural Center Lounge. 1-2 p.m. Join Boise State sociology professor Martin Orr as he discusses the issues of discrimination in dominant and non-dominant cultures. Free. Call 426-5950.

TUESDAY, APRIL 10
Boise Schools Career Fair. Taco Bell Arena. 10 a.m. The Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce and area businesses sponsor the career fair, which shows students the myriad of career choices that await them in the “real world.” The fair will also educate students on how to select and achieve career goals. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11
Drop-in Kayak Pool Session. Boise State Pool. 7-9:45 p.m. Practice your kayak roll, strokes, bow stalls, flat-water moves and other tricks. This is a non-instructional session. Sessions through May 2. No pre-registration is necessary. Cost is $5 with your own equipment, $10 with Recreation Center’s equipment. Call 426-2628.

THURSDAY, APRIL 12
HIV Counseling and Testing. Student Union Building (check kiosk the day of for location). 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Free rapid HIV testing will be available. Test is painless and results are confidential. Call 367-6079.

Eleanor Moty. Student Union Farnsworth Room. 6 p.m. Artist Eleanor Moty will present the lecture “Works: Past and Present” as part of the Arts Metals Visiting Artists Series. She will also present the workshop “Bench Tips for Metalsmiths” from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 14 in the Boise State Art Metals Studio, Liberal Arts Room 157. Registration required. Free. Call 426-1230.

“Stomp the Yard.” Student Union Hatch A and B Ballroom. 7 and 9 p.m. Presented as part of the SPB Film Series, this film is the story of a young street dancer from Los Angeles who attends a historically black university in Georgia and uses his fierce street-style dance moves in the national step show competition. This film is rated PG-13. Free for Boise State students with ID and $1 for the general public. Free popcorn and soda will be served. Call 426-3835.

“Fearless.” Special Events Center. 8 p.m. Idaho Dance Theatre presents a modern dance concert of entirely new works by four choreographers: Carl Rowe, Marla Hansen, Yurek Hansen and Kaelen O’Shea. The concert includes a work of new music by composer David Earnest, performed by two cellists. This event also takes place at 8 p.m. April 13 and 14 and at 2 p.m. April 15. FRIDAY, APRIL 13
Percussion Festival. Morrison Center, Room B125, C125, Morrison Center Recital Hall. All day Friday, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. College and university percussion ensembles from the Northwest perform in a non-competitive setting. The Friday concert features the Boise State Percussion Ensemble and the Verde Percussion Group; the Saturday concert features faculty members and artistic directors performing solo works. Free. Bring Your Own Voice. Cultural Center Lounge. 4-6 p.m. The Boise State Cultural Center presents this writing workshop where writers can share their work with friends and peers. Writers learn new skills and develop their strengths. Free. Call 426-5950.

SATURDAY, APRIL 14
Health and Human Performance Club Fun Run/Walk. Meet in front of the Kinesiology Building. 8:30 a.m. Start the spring right with a community event to bring students and their families and friends together to benefit the Boise State Kinesiology Department. Route for the 5K or 10k run/walk will be along the Greenbelt. Free T-shirt and raffle prizes will be available for participants. Registration is $20. BSU Volunteers. Student Union Brava! Stage. 9 a.m. Boise State University Volunteer Services Board invites students to give back to the community, experience leading a volunteer project with local non-profit organizations and work with other student leaders. Risk Awareness Workshops. Student Union Lookout Room. Workshop 1 9 a.m.-noon; workshop 2 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sensei Pon Ithathirath of Boise’s Dragon Bushido Karate Dojo teaches karate to students of all ages, as well as self-defense classes, and Muay Thai kickboxing. Participants will learn to think and react to situations of danger with strangers and acquaintances. The morning workshop is for women and their daughters over age 12 together; the afternoon workshop is open for all female Boise State students. Registration required. Free. Call 426-4259.

Food, Supply Drive for City Light Home for Women and Children. Bronco Stadium parking lot. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Community members are encouraged to donate 30-gallon trash bags, Pedialyte, feminine products, razors, dental floss, clothing items, food, paper products and more. City Light provides shelter and meals for women and children who are seeking to move off the streets. Choral Concert. Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m. Featuring the Meistersingers, the University Singers and Vox Angelis. Music will include opera choruses by Verdi and Mozart as well as virtuoso choral works by Rene Clausen, Martin Shaw and Charles Villers Stanford. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18
“Because I Said So.” Student Union Special Events Center. 7 and 9 p.m. This 2007 film stars Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore. The film is part of the Student Programs Board Film Series and will also be shown at 7 and 9 p.m. April 19. This film is rated PG-13. THURSDAY, APRIL 19
International Connections. Student Union Lookout Room. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Michael Zirinsky, history, presents “Iran and the U.S.: A Vexed Relationship,” exploring the deep history of U.S.-Iranian relations, from their origins in the 1830s up to the present day. Free. Call 426-3652.

FRIDAY, APRIL 20

Basque Studies Conference. Various locations. April 20-22. The Boise State University Basque Studies Center and the Idaho Basque community have joined to present an educational, festive and commemorative conference. Events include keynote addresses by Ibon Mendibelzua Madariaga and Rev. Alec Reid, a Basque tribute and public dance, a Memorial Basque mass and more. Alexander String Quartet. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 8 p.m. The Alexander String Quartet is a favorite, world-class string quartet from the Bay Area. The quartet celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2006 and has performed in the major capitals of four continents, securing its standing among the world’s premier ensembles. SATURDAY, APRIL 21
Quartet Competition. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 9:30 a.m.-noon. The Alexander Quartet will judge the Boise Chamber Music Series String Quartet Competition, featuring six high schools and college-age quartets performing selected repertoire. First-place winners will perform a short reprise recital at 2 p.m. April 22. Free. Call 426-1609.

Hui-O-Aloha Luau. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Doors open at 5 p.m. for reserved ticket holders, general to follow. Come experience Polynesian paradise with Boise State’s Hui-O-Aloha. Island-style buffet dinner will be served, and dances from the islands of Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti and New Zealand will be performed. Ballet Idaho. Morrison Center. 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Celebrate the soulful sounds of gospel music during “American Spirit,” with a live performance by Cherie Buckner and the Celebration Choir. Boise arranger and pianist Randall Coryell joins the company for an evening of pure inspiration.
