71 Idaho High School Juniors Receive $1,000 Scholarships Through Boise State Capital Scholars Program

Boise State University has awarded 71 Idaho high school juniors with $1,000 renewable scholarships based on academic achievements for matriculation to Boise State. They were eligible for scholarships with their participation in the Boise State Capital Scholars program on Monday (April 9). The scholarship fund is endowed by sales proceeds from the Boise State Bookstore.

Recipients visited the Boise State campus from throughout the state, including Aberdeen, American Falls, Boise, Burley, Cottonwood, Council, Eagle, Emmett, Fruitland, Gooding, Grand View, Hailey, Homedale, Idaho Falls, Jerome, Kamiah, Lewiston, McCall, Meridian, Middleton, Nampa, Parma, Preston, Riggins, Ririe, Shoshone, Star, Terreton and Twin Falls.

The Boise State Capital Scholars program has completed its third year. There has been an increase in student participation each year with 39 in 2005 and 60 in 2006 to this year’s cohort of 71 honorees.

“The Boise State Capital Scholars program continues to grow with increasing participation rates among Idaho’s high school juniors,” said enrollment counselor and Capital Scholars organizer Niki Callison. “This year’s change to a renewable scholarship has added even more value and demonstrates Boise State’s commitment to helping students with merit-based aid.”

Selection was based on college entrance examination scores and class rankings. All Idaho high school juniors who scored in the top 10 percent of the ACT, SAT or PSAT and ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school class were recognized as Boise State Capital Scholars, but they had to attend Monday’s event to receive their scholarship certificate.

Meghan Weaver a scholarship recipient from Nampa High School who is planning to study forensic science, said, “Boise State is one of my choices. I was surprised to receive the scholarship because only two of us from my high school received it. My parents were happy.”

“The program was well organized and Boise State was happy to have us here, like it wasn’t just a chore,” said Quinn Depperschmidt from Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls. “It was pretty cool. I got a good vibe.”

The program included a question and answer session with Vice President of Student Affairs Michael Laliberte; academic showcases with professors Eric Landrum and Henry Charlier and Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies Sharon McGuire; tours of campus with presentations at the College of Engineering, kinesiology labs, Morrison Performing Arts Center, and the Honors College; a reception with the deans; and the awards banquet with President Bob Kustra and Provost Sona Andrews as speakers.
