This Week at Boise State

The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of April 15-21. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated information on all events, visit http://events.boisestate.edu.

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
April 20-22: Basque Studies Conference. Various locations. The Boise State University Basque Studies Center and the Idaho Basque community have joined to present an educational, festive and commemorative conference. Events include keynote addresses by Ibon Mendibelzua Madariaga and Rev. Alec Reid, a Basque tribute and public dance, a Memorial Basque mass and more. EXHIBITIONS:
Through April 17: Undergraduate Research Initiative Exhibition. Student Union Gallery. Open 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. Free. Call 426-1223.

Through May 1: “Yield: BFA Thesis Exhibition.” Visual Arts Center Gallery 1, Liberal Arts Building and Gallery 2, Hemingway Center. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sundays and university holidays. “Yield” features the works of 14 graduating students studying graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, art metals and mixed media. SUNDAY, APRIL 15
“Fearless.” Student Union Special Events Center. 2 p.m. Idaho Dance Theatre presents a modern dance concert of entirely new works by four choreographers: Carl Rowe, Marla Hansen, Yurek Hansen and Kaelen O’Shea. The concert includes a work of new music by composer David Earnest, performed by two cellists. “A Buddhist History of the United States.” Morrison Center Stage II. 2 p.m. Presented by the Boise State University Theatre Arts Department, professor Phil Atlakson creates a bold and radical restaging of events in American history, utilizing the performance and conventions of the Noh drama of Japan. This event will also take place April 18-21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 21 at 2 p.m. Mature audiences only. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 non-Boise State students, seniors, Boise State alumni and military. Full-time Boise State students, faculty and staff may pick up one free ticket with ID at the Student Union Info Desk. Call 426-3957.

Choral Concert. Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m. Featuring the Meistersingers, the University Singers and Vox Angelis. Music will include opera choruses by Verdi and Mozart as well as virtuoso choral works by Rene Clausen, Martin Shaw and Charles Villers Stanford. Tickets $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

Mignarda Duo. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. The Mignarda Duo will play lute songs of the English and Italian Renaissance. Sponsored by the Boise Early Music Society. Tickets $10 general, $5 students and seniors. Call 426-1609.

MONDAY, APRIL 16
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Conference. Student Union, various locations. 1-4 p.m. About 250 Boise State University undergraduates will display their research, artistic and scholarly projects. Representing disciplines from across campus, the students will give presentations and answer questions. Free. Call 426-4062.

“Who Killed the Electric Car?” Student Union Barnwell Room. 6 p.m. This documentary explores why the famous electric car that was doing so well has vanished from the market. A presentation on Focus the Nation will be presented before the film by Jen Pierce, assistant professor in the Department of Geosciences. This event is in conjunction with Earth Week, sponsored by Volunteer Services Board and Campus Greens. Free. Call 426-4240.

Comedian Michael Dean Ester. Student Union Special Events Center. 7 p.m. Ester speaks at college campuses across the nation, and he knows all about university life and how to entertain a college crowd. Presented by the Student Programs Board. Free. Call 426-1728.

TUESDAY, APRIL 17
Journey of Hope. Student Union Special Events Center. 7-9 p.m. Children of Camp Heartland will speak openly and honestly about their experiences living with HIV/AIDS. The program is presented around the nation, and the main goal is to connect with audience members. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Student Programs Board, the Associated Students of Boise State University, Student Activities, the Pre-Med Club and the Cultural Center are sponsors. Free. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18
“Because I Said So.” Student Union Special Events Center. 7 and 9 p.m. This 2007 film stars Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore. The film is part of the Student Programs Board Film Series and will also be shown at 7 and 9 p.m. April 19. This film is rated PG-13. Free for Boise State students with ID and $1 for the general public. Free popcorn and soda will be served. Call 426-3835.

Raft-Rigging for Multi-Day River Trips. Student Recreation Center Outdoor Program Office. 7-9 p.m. Learn how to efficiently plan a multi-day river trip. This session will cover food buys and prep, transportation, shuttles, land management regulations, equipment rentals and the best camp sites and hikes for your river section. Part of the Wednesday Night Adventure Series. Free. Call 426-2628.

THURSDAY, APRIL 19
International Connections. Student Union Lookout Room. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Michael Zirinsky, history, presents “Iran and the U.S.: A Vexed Relationship,” exploring the deep history of U.S.-Iranian relations, from their origins in the 1830s up to the present day. Free. Call 426-3652.

FRIDAY, APRIL 20
Bicycle Congress. Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room. 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Boise State invites the community to consider questions about alternative transportation. This year’s conference includes national and international experts. All sessions are free and open to the public, but an RSVP is requested. E-mail bicyclecongress@boisestate.edu to RSVP. Diversity Day Defined. Student Union Patio. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The second annual Diversity Day Defined festival celebrates diversity found on and off campus. Alexander String Quartet. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 8 p.m. The Alexander String Quartet is a favorite, world-class string quartet from the Bay Area. The quartet celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2006 and has performed in the major capitals of four continents, securing its standing among the world’s premier ensembles. SATURDAY, APRIL 21
Locks of Love Cut-Off. Fantastic Sam’s (2976 E. State Street) 9-11 a.m.; The Metamorphosis Salon (1406 Broadway) 10 a.m.-Noon. Free haircuts will be given during the 5th annual Locks of Love Cut-Off for donations of ten inches of healthy hair. The donations are used to make hairpieces for children with medical hair loss. Sponsored by Boise State University Honors Student Association. Call 426-1248.

Quartet Competition. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 9:30 a.m.-noon. The Alexander Quartet will judge the Boise Chamber Music Series String Quartet Competition, featuring six high schools and college-age quartets performing selected repertoire. First-place winners will perform a short reprise recital at 2 p.m. April 22. Free. Call 426-1609.

Hui-O-Aloha Luau. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Doors open at 5 p.m. for reserved ticket holders, general to follow. Come experience Polynesian paradise with Boise State’s Hui-O-Aloha. Island-style buffet dinner will be served, and dances from the islands of Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti and New Zealand will be performed. Ballet Idaho. Morrison Center. 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Celebrate the soulful sounds of gospel music during “American Spirit,” with a live performance by Cherie Buckner and the Celebration Choir. Boise arranger and pianist Randall Coryell joins the company for an evening of pure inspiration. Symphonic Winds. Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m. The University Symphonic Winds will present its spring concert with W. Francis McBeth conducting, featuring the Fruitland High School Concert Band and the All-Star Junior High/Middle School Band. The University Symphonic Winds will perform McBeth’s “Of Sailors and Whales.” Tickets $5 general, $3 seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

TUESDAY, APRIL 24
Diverse Perspective Series. Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room. 5-6:30 p.m. Boise State and ITVS Community Cinema present a screening of the documentary “Knocking,” which focuses on Jehovah’s Witnesses. Following the film, a Jehovah’s Witness will speak and lead an audience discussion on civil liberties and bloodless surgery, two elements that are prominent in the film. Free. Call 426-1223.

Tubas-Bones in Concert. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 6 p.m. The Boise State University Tuba-Euphonium and Trombone Choir will rock the house at this recital. Tickets $5 general, $3 seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25
“Unleash Your Inner Chef.” Student Union Hatch C and D Ballrooms. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Join Wellness Services in discussing the importance of local foods, community through food and the psychology of healthy eating. Maggie Hadleigh-West. Student Union Special Events Center. 7-9 p.m. Through her film “War Zone,” her humor and personal experience, Maggie Hadleigh-West immerses her audiences in discussions about the looks, “compliments” and judgments that women face every day from men. FRIDAY, APRIL 27
Poet Nathaniel Mackey Reading. Hemingway Center. 7:30 p.m. Part of the MFA Reading Series, Mackey’s books of poetry include “Splay Anthem,” which won the 2006 National Book Award in poetry, “Whatsaid Serif,” “Songs of the Andoumboulou” and more. SATURDAY, APRIL 28
Hispanic Health Public Meeting. Hispanic Cultural Center, 315 Stampede Drive, Nampa. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to gather area Hispanics together to generate a prioritized list of health conditions they believe need to be addressed, as well as suggestions they feel will work. All adult Hispanics and their families are invited to attend and share their opinions. Lunch will be provided. One lucky attendee will receive a Boise State scholarship. The event is sponsored by the Idaho Partnership for Hispanic Health, Boise State’s Department of Nursing, Mountain States Group, the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs and other agencies. Boise Philharmonic. Morrison Center. 10 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. The Boise Philharmonic will play Sibelius, Mahler, Liszt and Dvorak, featuring Lori-Kaye Miller, mezzo-soprano, and Raymond Harvey, conductor. Tickets available through the Boise Philharmonic, 344-7849.

“Avenue Montaigne.” The Flicks, 646 Fulton. 12:30 p.m. Film lovers will get a chance to discuss the French film “Avenue Montaigne” with Mariah Devereux Herbeck, a professor in Boise State University’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. This film is rated PG-13. Tickets $6. For information about the discussion, call 426-2383.

Writers Ben Doyle and Sandra Miller Reading. Piazza di Vino, 212 N. 9th Street. 7 p.m. The final MFA reading of the year features the married couple’s work. Doyle’s first collection of poems, “Radio,” was selected for the 2000 Walt Whitman award from the Academy of American Poets. Miller’s first book, Oriflamme, was published by Ahsahta Press in 2005. Yuyen Chang. Student Union Hatch C Ballroom. 7 p.m. Yuyen Chang will speak about “The Rice Series” and will give a workshop on “Organic Form in Metal” as part of the Spring 2007 Art Metals Visiting Series.
