Boise State Women's Center Presents Sexual Assault Awareness
Month Activities April 23-24, 26
The Boise State University Women’s Center and a number of community advocacy
groups will present Take Back the Night activities April 23-24 and a keynote
speaker April 26 on the Boise State campus. The events are designed to raise
awareness about sexual violence during national Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
— “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 23 on the
University Quad and SUB patio. Presented with Men Today Men Tomorrow, the event
invites people to don high heels and walk in the shoes of a sexual assault
survivor. The first 100 participants will receive a T-shirt.
— During the same hours, student sexual assault survivors and friends of
survivors/victims will be able to “plant” a fresh flower on the Quad to give a
visual representation of the number of sexual assaults that are reported in the
community.
— A rally will be held from 7-8 p.m. April 24 on the Student Union Patio and
will feature slam poets, music and speakers. Immediately following the rally,
counselors will hold de-briefing sessions and sharing circles for abuse
survivors or others who wish to attend. The women’s session will be held from
8-10 p.m. in the Women’s Center; the men’s session will be from 8-10 p.m. in the
Johnson Room of the Student Union.
— The Women’s Center will present “The Fear of Rape: Are College Campuses a War
Zone for Women?” film and discussion by Maggie Hadleigh-West from 7-9 p.m. April
26 in the Boise State Special Events Center. Through her critically acclaimed
film “War Zone,” her humor and personal experience, Hadleigh-West immerses her
audiences in tumultuous discussions about the looks, “compliments,” and
judgments that women face every day from men in public. “War Zone” – shot in
cities across the U.S. – reveals the anger, fear and frustration as well as the
affection, admiration and humor that characterizes the relationships between men
and women.
For more information about any of the events, call the Boise State Women’s
Center at 426-4256.
Take Back the Night rallies are held across the world to raise awareness of the
attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that perpetuate violence. The main focus of the
rallies has been on sexual violence against individuals, particularly women.
Co-sponsors for Take Back the Night include Boise State Women’s Center, Boise
