This Week at Boise State
The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of
April 22-28. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated
information on all events, visit

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
April 23-24 and 26: Sexual Assault Awareness Month Activities. The Boise
State University Women’s Center and a number of community advocacy groups
present Take Back the Night activities on the Boise State campus. Events include
“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 23 on the University Quad
and SUB patio; and a rally from 7-8 p.m. April 24 on the Student Union Patio
features slam poets, music and speakers. The film “The Fear of Rape: Are College
Campuses a War Zone for Women?” will be shown from 7-9 p.m. April 26 in the
Boise State Special Events Center, followed by a discussion with Maggie Hadleigh-West.
The events are designed to raise awareness about sexual violence during national
Sexual Assault Awareness Month. For more information, call 426-4259.
April 23-26: National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The Department of
Criminal Justice hosts workshops aimed at students and members of the general
public who are interested in victimization, victims’ experiences in our nations’
justice systems, victim advocates and victim/witness coordinators, and the
history of the victims’ rights movement. Workshops will be held in the Student
Union Building beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m. each day. A

EXHIBITIONS:
Through May 1: “Yield: BFA Thesis Exhibition.” Visual Arts Center Gallery
1, Liberal Arts Building and Gallery 2, Hemingway Center. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sundays and university
holidays. “Yield” features the works of 14 graduating students studying graphic
design, painting, photography, printmaking, art metals and mixed media. Free.

SUNDAY, APRIL 22
Basque Studies Conference. Memorial Basque mass, St. Paul’s Catholic
Center, 1915 University Drive, 1 p.m.; tribute performance, Student Union
Special Events Center, 3 p.m.; reception, Basque Center, 601 W. Grove Street, 5
p.m. Basque community memorial tribute to Jimmy Jausoro. Jausoro was known for
his contributions to Basque culture in Idaho. In 1957, he started the Jim
Jausoro Band with some friends, and for years provided musical accompaniment to
the Oinkari Basque Dancers. Free. Call 426-2710.
Symphonic Winds. Morrison Center Main Hall. 7:30 p.m. The University
Symphonic Winds will present its spring concert with W. Francis McBeth
conducting, featuring the Fruitland High School Concert Band and the All-Star
Junior High/Middle School Band. The University Symphonic Winds will perform
McBeth’s “Of Sailors and Whales.” Tickets $5 general, $3 seniors and free for
students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.
MONDAY, APRIL 23
Fitness and Nutrition Campaign. Student Union. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Join Boise
State Health and Wellness Services April 23-27 for fitness and nutrition tips to
spring into the new season. Visit the marketing booths in the Student Union for

TUESDAY, APRIL 24
Diverse Perspective Series. Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room. 5-6:30
p.m. Boise State and ITVS Community Cinema present a screening of the
documentary “Knocking,” which focuses on Jehovah’s Witnesses. Following the
film, a Jehovah’s Witness will speak and lead an audience discussion on civil
liberties and bloodless surgery, two elements that are prominent in the film.

Tubas-Bones in Concert. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 6 p.m. The Boise
State University Tuba-Euphonium and Trombone Choir will rock the house at this
recital. Tickets $5 general, $3 seniors and free for students of all ages and

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25
Student Organization Award Ceremony. Student Union Jordan D Ballroom. 6
p.m. Come celebrate the accomplishments of the student organizations of Boise
State. Free. RSVP by April 18, by calling 426-1223.
“Unleash Your Inner Chef.” Student Union Hatch C and D Ballrooms.
6:30-8:30 p.m. Join Wellness Services in discussing the importance of local
foods, community through food and the psychology of healthy eating. Interesting
and healthy foods will be introduced, discussed and sampled. Free. Class size is

Outdoor Camp Cooking. Student Recreation Center Outdoor Program Office.
7-9 p.m. Learn to cook gourmet food while camping in the outdoors. This clinic
will teach you the tricks of the pros while emphasizing outdoor kitchen safety.

THURSDAY, APRIL 26
Maggie Hadleigh-West. Special Events Center. 7-9 p.m. Through her film
“War Zone,” her humor and personal experience, Maggie Hadleigh-West immerses her
audiences in discussions about the looks, “compliments” and judgments that women
face every day from men. Part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Free. Call

“Global Climate Change: The Science, the Impact, and the Effort to Educate
from an Anthropological Perspective.” Multipurpose Classroom Building Room
108. Lecture and discussion with professors Christopher Hill, geoarcheology,
John Ziker, cultural anthropology, and Robert McCarl, cultural anthropology.

FRIDAY, APRIL 27
Poet Nathaniel Mackey Reading. Hemingway Center. 7:30 p.m. Part of the
MFA Reading Series, Mackey’s books of poetry include “Splay Anthem,” which won
the 2006 National Book Award in poetry, “Whatsaid Serif,” “Songs of the
Andoumboulou” and more. Mackey is also a critic and literary theorist. Free.

SATURDAY, APRIL 28
Hispanic Health Public Meeting. Hispanic Cultural Center, 315 Stampede
Drive, Nampa. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to gather area
Hispanics together to generate a prioritized list of health conditions they
believe need to be addressed, as well as suggestions they feel will work. All
adult Hispanics and their families are invited to attend and share their
opinions. Lunch will be provided. One lucky attendee will receive a Boise State

Idaho Partnership for Hispanic Health, Boise State’s Department of Nursing,

Philharmonic will play Sibelius, Mahler, Liszt and Dvorak, featuring Lori-Kaye
Miller, mezzo-soprano, and Raymond Harvey, conductor. Tickets available through

“Avenue Montaigne.” The Flicks, 646 Fulton. 12:30 p.m. Film lovers will
get a chance to discuss the French film “Avenue Montaigne” with Mariah Devereux
Herbeck, a professor in Boise State University’s Department of Modern Languages
and Literatures. This film is rated PG-13. Tickets $6. For information about the

Ben Doyle and Sandra Miller Reading. Piazza di Vino, 212 N. 9th Street. 7
p.m. The final MFA reading of the year features the married couple’s work.
Doyle’s first collection of poems, “Radio,” was selected for the 2000 Walt
Whitman award from the Academy of American Poets. Miller’s first book, “Oriflamme,”

speak about “The Rice Series” and will give a workshop on “Organic Form in

of St. Giles will perform troubadour songs, court songs and dances from the

THURSDAY, MAY 3
Basic Bike Repair Clinic. Student Recreation Center Patio. 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Park your car at home and get your bike out of the garage. Here is your chance
to drop by with your bike and have a trained mechanic give you technical advice.
The mechanic will help you make minor adjustments and do preventative

Fettuccine Forum. Rose Room. 5:30 p.m.; doors open at 5 p.m. Justice
Byron Johnson will discuss the 1907 Haywood conspiracy trial. Presented by the

Celebrate Wellness Conference. Student Union, second floor.
Pre-conference 7-8:30 p.m.; Conference May 4, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The fourth annual
Celebrate Wellness Conference is coordinated by Boise State University, in
cooperation with St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and Saint Alphonsus Regional
Medical Center. General admission for pre-conference is $10, and $75 for the
conference. Admission for Boise State students is $5 for pre-conference and $30

FRIDAY, MAY 4
Boise State Radio CD Sale. Micron Building. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The CD sale
makes more than 4,000 new and used recordings available for sale at $3 each as a
fundraiser. Donors are invited to trade in three full-length CDs and receive one
free CD. Available CDs include jazz, rock, blues, folk, world music and

SATURDAY, MAY 5
Spring Fling. Julia Davis Park. 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Boise State Student
Programs Board presents the fiesta-themed Spring Fling, featuring musical
performances by a mariachi band, Sol Jibe, Dan Purser with T.J. Sherrill and
Melefluent. Other events include art and food vendors, activities for families
and more. The event is free and open to the public. Admission for games, the
jump house, rock wall and other activities is $5 for non-students and students
with family and $7 for non-student families. These activities are free for Boise
State students with ID. Call 426-3835.
