This Week at Boise State

The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of April 29-May 5. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated information on all events, visit http://events.boisestate.edu

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
May 5-7: Clay and Fire Sale. Visual Arts Center Gallery One, Liberal Arts Building. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mother’s Day and graduation shoppers will find a huge variety of one-of-a-kind gifts at the “Clay and Fire” sale and exhibition. Ceramics to fit everyone’s décor and budget will be on sale. Held each fall and spring for more than 30 years, the event has become an annual tradition for many in the Treasure Valley. It features hundreds of ceramic pieces, ranging from elegant to exotic, made by Boise State students, faculty and alumni. A portion of the proceeds benefits Boise State’s Visiting Artists in Ceramics program. Call 426-1230.

EXHIBITIONS:
Through May 1: “Yield: BFA Thesis Exhibition.” Visual Arts Center Gallery 1, Liberal Arts Building and Gallery 2, Hemingway Center. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sundays and university holidays. “Yield” features the works of 14 graduating students studying graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, art metals and mixed media. May 1-5: “Civic Engagement Poster Exhibit.” Student Union Art Gallery. Open 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. This exhibition highlights service-learning students and their application of coursework to community issues, innovative teaching and campus/community partnerships with Treasure Valley non-profit organizations. Reception from 4-6 p.m. May 4. Free. Call 426-1223.

SUNDAY, APRIL 29
Film and Video Festival. Special Events Center. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., event starts at 5 p.m. The 12th Boise State Film Festival features fictional and documentary movies. Raffle tickets will be available at the festival for two trips to the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Party to follow at the Visual Arts Collective, 1419 Grove Street. Sponsored by the Dead Eight Film and Video Club, a Boise State student organization. Proceeds benefit TVCTV. Visit http://www.tvctvonline.org for more information. Guitar Recital. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 4 p.m. Students of Joseph Baldassarre present quartets duos and solos from the Renaissance through the 20th century. Tickets $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

Academy of St. Giles. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. The Academy of St. Giles will perform troubadour songs, court songs and dances from the Middle Ages, madrigals and instrumentals from the Renaissance and sonatas from the Baroque. Featuring the music of Occitania, France and Germany. Tickets $5 general, $3 for seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

MONDAY, APRIL 30
Heike Mayer. J.R. Williams Building, 700 W. State Street, first-floor conference room. 1 p.m. Mayer, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech University, will discuss emerging technology regions, including Boise. This event is sponsored by Boise State, the Idaho Office of Science and Technology and the Boise Valley Economic Partnership. Seating is limited. Free. To RSVP, call 426-2397.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 2
“Beauty and the Beast.” Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Part of Boise Music Week, this performance features Boise community members. This event also takes place at 7:30 p.m. May 3-5 and at 2 p.m. May 5. Free. Non-ticket holders will be allowed in 10 minutes before the show until the theater is full. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early. Call 375-4711 or visit www.boisemusicweek.org

Theatre Majors Association Showcase. Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. This event also takes place at 7:30 p.m. May 3-4 and 2 p.m. May 5. Tickets available at the door. Call 426-3957.

THURSDAY, MAY 3
Basic Bike Repair Clinic. Student Recreation Center Patio. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Park your car at home and get your bike out of the garage. Here is your chance to drop by with your bike and have a trained mechanic give you technical advice. The mechanic will help you make minor adjustments and do preventative maintenance. Sponsored by Boise State Campus Recreation. Free. Call 426-2628.

Fettuccine Forum. Rose Room. 5:30 p.m.; doors open at 5 p.m. Justice Byron Johnson will discuss the 1907 Haywood conspiracy trial. Presented by the Center for Idaho History and Politics and the Boise Office of the Mayor. Free appetizers will be served and fettuccine will be available for $5. Free. Call 426-3701.

Celebrate Wellness Conference. Student Union, second floor. Pre-conference 7-8:30 p.m.; Conference May 4, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The fourth annual Celebrate Wellness Conference is coordinated by Boise State University, in cooperation with St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. General admission for pre-conference is $10, and $75 for the conference. Admission for Boise State students is $5 for pre-conference and $30 for conference. Call 426-3861.

FRIDAY, MAY 4
Boise State Radio CD Sale. Micron Building. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The CD sale makes more than 4,000 new and used recordings available for sale at $3 each as a fundraiser. Donors are invited to trade in three full-length CDs and receive one free CD. Available CDs include jazz, rock, blues, folk, world music and classical. Call 426-3663.

Irena Ravitskaya. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. The Faculty Artist Series wraps up for the school year with a concert by pianist Irena Ravitskaya. $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

FRIDAY, MAY 5
Spring Fling. Julia Davis Park. 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Boise State Student Programs Board presents the fiesta-themed Spring Fling, featuring musical performances by Sol Jibe, Dan Purser with T.J. Sherrill and Melefluent. Other events include art and food vendors, jugglers, contests, activities for families and more. The event is free and open to the public. Admission for games, the jump house, rock wall and other activities is $5 for non-students and students with family and $7 for non-student families. These activities are free for Boise State students with ID. Call 426-1237.

SUNDAY, MAY 6
Cinco de Mayo. Student Union Patio. Noon-6 p.m. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the Boise State Cultural Center and Organizacion de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos. Activities include performances, vendors, an art show, a car show and a performance by the internationally-known band La Sonora Dinamita. Free. Call 426-5950.

Concerto Aria. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Recent winners of the 2007 Concerto-Aria Competition will perform with the University Orchestra. Presented by the Boise State Department of Music. MONDAY, MAY 7
Spring Portfolio Show: “Ripe.” 612 Grove St. (formerly the Calle Verde restaurant). 6 p.m. Boise State University graphic design students will share their “freshly squeezed” ideas at the 2007 spring portfolio show. Sixteen graduating students will present their graphic design, illustration and photography work. Music will be provided by DJ Eli Andrew and the reception will be catered by Bardenay. The show is co-sponsored by the Department of Art and the Student Union. Free. Call 426-4109.

TUESDAY, MAY 8
Student Union Groundbreaking. Time TBA. Boise State will break ground to remodel the Student Union and expand it by 66,000 square feet. Table Rock Café will be moved to the first floor, the Bookstore will nearly double in size and space will be provided for more than 20 student organizations, the Women’s Center and University Pulse. Be part of the excitement and celebrate the groundbreaking for the new addition. Call 426-1223.

THURSDAY, MAY 10
HIV Counseling and Testing. Student Union Building (check kiosk the day of for location). 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Free rapid HIV testing will be available. Test is painless and results are confidential. Call 367-6079.

Religion Scholar Martin Marty. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 7 p.m. Marty, a world-renowned scholar of religion and Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, will present “Everyone Gets In On the Act: Connecting Faiths and the Environment.” Marty is the author of more than 50 books, including “Righteous Empire,” for which he won the National Book Award. His lecture is sponsored by Boise State’s Arts and Humanities Residential College, the Idaho Humanities Council and the Idaho Conservation League. Free. Call 426-4309.

“Knocked Up.” Special Events Center. 7 p.m. Student Programs Board presents an advance screening of the film “Knocked Up,” which will be released in theaters June 1. Directed and written by Judd Apatow, who directed “40-Year-Old Virgin.” This film is rated “R.” Free popcorn and soda will be provided. Free tickets available at the Student Union Info Desk; tickets required. Call 426-3835.

Celtic Woman. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Celtic Woman has been seen on PBS stations all over America featuring five young stars of Irish music. The show has played to sold-out houses across the country, including Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Opera House. Since their March 2005 debut, Celtic Woman has appeared on PBS, The Today Show and Live with Regis and Kelly. Tickets $42-$57. Call 426-1609.

FRIDAY, MAY 11
Finals Relief Whitewater Rafting Trip. Payette River. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Let go of the stress from finals week and join Boise State Outdoor Programs for a day of whitewater rafting on the Payette River. Register by April 27. Cost is $25, which includes transportation, lunch and all equipment. Call 426-2628.

Nickel Creek. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Nickel Creek, a Grammy Award-winning American acoustic music trio with roots in bluegrass, will perform with special guest artist Jon Brion. Nickel Creek has received critical acclaim for their music, which blends bluegrass with rock elements. The Chicago Tribune said the band is “arguably the finest acoustic string ensemble operating today.” Tickets $25-$30. Call 426-1609.

SATURDAY, MAY 12
Spring Commencement. Taco Bell Arena. 10 a.m., doors open at 8:30 a.m. The spring commencement ceremony will include the processional and recessional of candidates as well as individual recognition of each person and hooding of a doctoral candidate. Steve Appleton, CEO of Micron Technology, will be presented with an honorary doctorate. A reception for graduates and families will be held immediately following the ceremony on the Intramural Field adjacent to the Taco Bell Arena and the Appleton Tennis Center. No ticket is needed for family and guests to attend. Parking is free. Call 426-4249.
