Boise State Students Present Speech Showcase May 7

Boise State University communication students will present their semi-annual Speech Showcase at 7 p.m. Monday, May 7, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Emceed by professor Marty Most, the Speech Showcase is a keen competition between student public speakers who have been nominated by students and instructors of Communication 101 classes. Each of the eight finalists from preliminary rounds of judging, representative of more than 1,000 students taking Communication 101, will present an eight-minute speech to compete for more than $1,500 in scholarship money, as decided by a panel of distinguished judges. During the judges’ deliberations, audience members will be involved in a contest of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”

Rob Perez, a senior vice president for U.S. Bank and major underwriter for the event, will judge the competition along with Kathy Kustra, wife of Boise State President Bob Kustra, Connie Pratt, state training manager for Idaho’s Office of Human Resources, Mike Read, WinCo Foods’ vice president of public and legal affairs, and Colleen Birch Maile, editor-in-chief of Go! Publications (Skywest and other airline magazines).

The department’s goal in sponsoring this event is two-fold: to provide models of and motivate speakers toward speech excellence, and in general to celebrate successful communication in the public sphere.
