This Week at Boise State
Editor’s Note: Due to the end of the academic year, “This Week at Boise
State” will take a hiatus, returning in August.
The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of
May 6-12. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
May 12: Spring Commencement. Taco Bell Arena. 10 a.m., doors open at
8:30 a.m. The spring commencement ceremony will include the processional and
recessional of candidates as well as individual recognition of each person
and hooding of a doctoral candidate. Steve Appleton, CEO of Micron
Technology, will be presented with an honorary doctorate. A reception for
graduates and families will be held immediately following the ceremony on
the Intramural Field adjacent to the Taco Bell Arena and the Appleton Tennis
Center. No ticket is needed for family and guests to attend. Parking is

EXHIBITIONS:
May 7-17: Idaho Paints Idaho Traveling Exhibition. Student Union Gallery.
7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. This exhibit highlights artwork from Idaho artists
chosen by juror Barbara Robinson from the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

May 23-June 26: Idaho Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition. Student
Union Gallery. 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. This exhibit features the talents of
Idaho watercolor artists. Reception 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 25. Free. Call

MONDAY, MAY 7
Clay and Fire Sale. Visual Arts Center Gallery One, Liberal Arts
Building. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mother’s Day and graduation shoppers will find a
huge variety of one-of-a-kind gifts at the “Clay and Fire” sale and
exhibition. Ceramics to fit everyone’s décor and budget will be on sale.
Held each fall and spring for more than 30 years, the event has become an
annual tradition for many in the Treasure Valley. It features hundreds of
ceramic pieces, ranging from elegant to exotic, made by Boise State
students, faculty and alumni. A portion of the proceeds benefits Boise
State’s Visiting Artists in Ceramics program. Call 426-1230.
Spring Portfolio Show: “Ripe.” 612 Grove St. (formerly the Calle
Verde restaurant). 6 p.m. Boise State University graphic design students
will share their “freshly squeezed” ideas at the 2007 spring portfolio show.
Sixteen graduating students will present their graphic design, illustration
and photography work. Music will be provided by DJ Eli Andrew and the
reception will be catered by Bardenay. The show is co-sponsored by the
Department of Art and the Student Union. Free. Call 426-4109.
Speech Showcase. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 7 p.m. Boise State
University communication students present their semi-annual Speech Showcase,
a competition emceed by professor Marty Most. Finalists from preliminary
rounds of judging, representative of more than 1,000 students taking
Communication 101, will present an eight-minute speech to compete for more
than $1,500 in scholarship money, as decided by a panel of distinguished

TUESDAY, MAY 8
Student Union Groundbreaking. Student Union Patio. 11 a.m. Boise
State will break ground to remodel the Student Union and expand it by 66,000
square feet. Table Rock Café will be moved to the first floor, the Bookstore
will nearly double in size and space will be provided for more than 20
student organizations, the Women’s Center and University Pulse. President
Robert Kustra, Associated Students of Boise State University President Amy
Ortmann, Vice President for Student Affairs Michael Laliberte, and Director
of the Student Union and Student Involvement Leah Barrett will speak and
break ground for the expansion at 12:30 p.m. Free. Call 426-1223.
THURSDAY, MAY 10
HIV Counseling and Testing. Student Union Building (check kiosk the
day of for location). 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Free rapid HIV testing will be
available. Test is painless and results are confidential. Call 367-6079.
Religion Scholar Martin Marty. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 7 p.m.
Marty, a world-renowned scholar of religion and Fairfax M. Cone
Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago, will
present “Everyone Gets In On the Act: Connecting Faiths and the
Environment.” Marty is the author of more than 50 books, including
“Righteous Empire,” for which he won the National Book Award. His lecture is
sponsored by Boise State’s Arts and Humanities Residential College, the
Idaho Humanities Council and the Idaho Conservation League. Free. Call

“Knocked Up.” Special Events Center. 7 p.m. Student Programs Board
presents an advance screening of the film “Knocked Up,” which will be
released in theaters June 1. Directed and written by Judd Apatow, who
directed “40-Year-Old Virgin.” This film is rated “R.” Free popcorn and soda
will be provided. Free tickets available at the Student Union Info Desk;

Celtic Woman. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Celtic Woman has been
seen on PBS stations all over America featuring five young stars of Irish
music. The show has played to sold-out houses across the country, including
Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Opera House. Since their
March 2005 debut, Celtic Woman has appeared on PBS, The Today Show and Live
with Regis and Kelly. Tickets $42-$57. Call 426-1609.
FRIDAY, MAY 11
Finals Relief Whitewater Rafting Trip. Payette River. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Let go of the stress from finals week and join Boise State Outdoor Programs
for a day of whitewater rafting on the Payette River. Register by April 27.
Cost is $25, which includes transportation, lunch and all equipment. Call

Nickel Creek. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Nickel Creek, a Grammy
Award-winning American acoustic music trio with roots in bluegrass, will
perform with special guest artist Jon Brion. Nickel Creek has received
critical acclaim for their music, which blends bluegrass with rock elements.
The Chicago Tribune said the band is “arguably the finest acoustic string
ensemble operating today.” Tickets $25-$30. Call 426-1609.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The following is a highlight of Boise State events through July to note
on your calendar.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 16
Boise Choristers. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. The Boise
Choristers will present their 66th annual spring concert, which raises money
for a music scholarship at Boise State. This year’s theme is “Music in
Motion,” and will feature a variety of styles and eras of music with songs
such as “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” In
addition, the Choristers will be joined by the Mexican Folk Dancers, who
will do a special number during the show. Admission is free, but donations
will be accepted. Call 378-8219.
THURSDAY, MAY 17
River Safety/Rescue Seminar. Student Recreation Center Classroom, 7-9
p.m. May 19-20, Boise River, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This seminar is designed for
whitewater rafters and kayakers and will focus heavily on boater judgment
and accident prevention. Topics and activities include self rescue,
mid-river recoveries, vertical and broach pins, knots, z-drags, vector
pulls, tag line rescue, victim stabilization and recovery, and strong
swimmer rescues. The hands-on seminar will be taught primarily on the water.
The class will camp together on Saturday night at the river site. Bring a
Dutch oven for a potluck. Personal safety and thermal gear will need to be
provided by participants. Equipment rentals are available for this class at
50 percent off the normal rates. Registration costs $55 and ends on May 11.

FRIDAY, MAY 18
International Horn Society. Morrison Center. This event takes place
May 18-20. The Boise State Department of Music hosts the International Horn
Society Northwest Regional Symposium. Performances, master classes and
clinics with artists of international stature will attend, including William
Purvis, international soloist and chamber musician from New York City, and
Mark Robbins from the Seattle Symphony. Registration from noon-3 p.m.
Registration for individual days and tickets for the guest artist recital at

SATURDAY, MAY 19
‘Hairspray.’ Morrison Center. 8 p.m. With big girls, big hair and
even bigger laughs, “Hairspray” is a splashy musical based on the 1988 John
Waters film. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including best musical. Part of
the Fred Meyer Broadway Across America-Boise Series. This event also takes

WEDNESDAY, MAY 23
Whitewater Kayaking 102. Boise State Pool. 7-10 p.m. Depart for
Payette River at 9 a.m. May 26; return to Boise at 5 p.m. May 27. Do you
want to take your kayaking to the next level? If so, this class is for you!
During this class your roll, brace, and any other skills you wish to work on
will be fine tuned in the pool. Then we will take to the river for two days
of progressive skill development. On the river you will learn advanced river
running skills, river reading skills, river rescue, play boating, and
surfing techniques. The class will camp together on Saturday night at the
river. Meals are the responsibility of the participants. Registration costs

Sophie Milman. Morrison Center. Social hour at 7 p.m., performance at
8 p.m. The Morrison Center launches a new performance series titled “Behind
the Curtain.” Join Sophie Milman, a 23-year-old Russian-born jazz-singing
sensation, on the Morrison Center Stage. Seating is limited. Tickets

SATURDAY, JUNE 2
‘Hay Fever’ With Alumni. Idaho Shakespeare Festival. 6:30 p.m.
director’s discussion. The Boise State Alumni Association invites the public
to a special evening at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. President Bob Kustra
and his wife, Kathy, will be on hand to watch the comedy “Hay Fever” with
alumni. Enjoy a director’s discussion in the Interpretive Center exclusively
for Boise State guests. Discount tickets available by calling the festival

JUNE 11-15
Summer Chamber Music Camp. Morrison Center. For students in grades
7-12. $175 plus housing and meals if needed, with a discount for students
who have attended three or more sessions. $85 for half-days, grades 10-12.
String, woodwind, percussion, keyboard, brass, jazz improvisation and vocal.
Curriculum includes opera theater, scenes from musicals, music theory,
chamber ensemble, camp choir, group lessons, music appreciation, master
classes, concerts and planned group recreation. Application deadline May 25.

JUNE 15-16
e-Girls. An overnight adventure for girls entering grades 10-11
exploring engineering and technical careers and opportunities. Workshops,
led by the Society of Women Engineers professionals and college students,
may include: biomechanics of high-heeled shoes, packaging and the
environment, fun with chemistry, designer bridges, rocket into space,
computer networking, and a world of career choices. Free. Enrollment limited

JUNE 18-22
Gene Harris Jazz Camp. Morrison Center. For beginning and developing
jazz instrumental improvisers from fifth-grade to adult. $120. 1-5 p.m.
Concert 7 p.m. June 22. This camp focuses on jazz vocabulary, history,
improvisational theory, listening skills, forms, tunes and performance.

JUNE 18-30
Summer DanceFest 2007. Ages 12 and up; audition required. Cost varies
depending on schedule. Conducted in the Morrison Center, this camp consists
of two weeks of workshops for dancers at an intermediate to advanced
technique level. Features a complete curriculum in ballet, jazz, modern and
choreography taught by internationally known instructors. Summer DanceFest
Choreography Festival performances at 7 p.m. Fri. and Sat. June 29 and June
30 in Morrison Center Stage II. Housing option available. Presented by the

JUNE 21-23
Idaho All-Star Band. This camp is open to current band students
entering grades 8-12 and includes a performance at the International Fiddle
Festival Parade in Weiser. $75. Applications, available from local band

JULY 9-13
Cavalcade Camp. For students entering junior high and high school.
$210. Student camps are available for drum majors, color guard and drum
line. Director workshops are also available for credit or non-credit.

JULY 16-21
ENCORE! Summer Theatre Camp. For children and youth ages 6-18 (must
be entering first grade or older). $150 registration. This camp at the
Morrison Center features workshops and rehearsals coordinated by Missoula
Children’s Theatre and local teaching artists. Participants will rehearse
“The Jungle Book,” to be performed Friday and Saturday, July 20-21.

TUESDAY, JULY 31
Thunder in Boise. Bronco Stadium. 7:30 p.m. Thunder in Boise is a
Drum Corps International Contest featuring drum corps from around the
country. Competing drum corps include the Blue Knights, Bluecoats, Crossmen,
Glassmen, Mandarins, Santa Clara Vanguard, Seattle Cascades, The Cadets and
