Symposium Looks at Current Challenges to Civil Liberties
BSU Credit Available for Teachers
A two-day symposium looking at civil liberties will be held from 8:30 a.m.-5
p.m. June 21-22 at the College of Southern Idaho Fine Arts Auditorium.
Teachers may receive one professional education credit through Boise State
University by attending a special workshop titled “Current Challenges to
Civil Liberties: Presidential Power in War Time.” Registration is $50 per
person; pre-registration is requested.
Cost for those attending the symposium for credit is a $25 reduced
registration fee plus a $50 credit fee. To register for credit call Boise
State’s Division of Extended Studies at (208) 426-1709 or simply sign up at
the door.
Topics range from Japanese American cases in World War II to the current
challenges of balancing national security and protecting civil liberties. A
special session on teaching about the Japanese American experience will be
offered by Linda Tamura of Willamette University. In addition, an original
one-act play titled “Nisei” will be performed June 21. The play, written by
local playwright Samantha Marshall, is based on the true-life story of the
author’s grandparents, who met at the Minidoka Relocation Center.
The symposium will be followed by a pilgrimage of former internees at
Minidoka to the campsite. Symposium attendees are welcome to take part in
this event for an additional fee.
