iBeam Systems, Layton Construction Bring New Technology to
Boise State's Construction Management Program
Construction management students at Boise State University will have a
powerful new tool for studying construction sites, thanks to a donation from
iBEAM Systems and Layton Construction.
The firms donated the “iBeam Handheld,” a portable wireless
camera that transmits live images through the Internet. The camera will
allow professors and students in the Department of Construction Management
to share live, interactive walk-throughs of job sites with their classmates,
instructors or anyone involved in the construction industry.
“Up till now, we’ve had to rely on field trips to provide a visual
experience of the materials and methods that we teach in the classroom,”
said Rebecca Mirsky, chair of the Department of Construction Management in
Boise State’s College of Engineering.
“iBEAM’s Handheld camera technology provides an exciting new way to make the
field trip experience more accessible to more students without worrying
about the logistics of transportation and timing. We’re very grateful to
iBEAM and Layton Construction for making this technology available to our
students and faculty,” Mirsky said.
The new equipment will be used by students and instructors to study the
under-construction parking structure on University Drive just south of the
Student Union Building, and the Bronco Stadium expansion. The close-up views
of the university’s on-campus construction could be shared with students at
Boise State, as well as with students at other universities anywhere in the
world.
Unlike an ordinary Web cam, iBEAM’s Handheld allows an individual on the job
site to walk through a project and point out specific items or focus in on
areas of concern. Meanwhile, the contractor, architect, subcontractor,
supplier or client can watch the live images on a computer screen.
“We recognize that today’s students entering construction management must be
aware and have working knowledge of construction’s ever-changing face of
technology. By donating our technology, we strive to provide the students’
education and application of real job sites while still receiving
instruction and feedback in the classroom,” said Tom Allen, president of
iBEAM Systems
Added Jeff Miller of Layton Construction: “The future of our industry relies
on ensuring today’s students are receiving the best education available. Our
part in this donation is one of Layton Construction’s contributions toward
assisting Boise State University in achieving this goal. We are excited to
be involved with Boise State and iBEAM in this venture.”
