BSU Graduate Student Awarded Fulbright Scholarship to Study in South Korea

Margaret Parker, a graduate student in history at Boise State University, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to South Korea. Parker, of Idaho Falls, will study cultural and intellectual history over the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters. Parker is one of 1,300 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad during the 2007-2008 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Parker has focused her Boise State studies on 20th-century German philosophy. She was intrigued by the comparisons often made between Germany and Korea, countries which both experienced division during the Cold War. Parker, who served in Korea as a linguist for the military from 1997-2000, decided to expand her studies to include a look at Korean storyography, or the way different generations interpret Korean history. She will use oral histories as the basis of her research.

“Margaret Parker is a fabulous student, among the absolute best I’ve taught at Boise State University,” said Nick Miller, chair of the Department of History. “She’s the perfect Fulbrighter —inquisitive, a sharp thinker, open-minded, the sort of student who will both benefit from the program and be a credit to it.”

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic or professional achievements, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has provided approximately 279,500 people with the opportunity to observe each others’ political, economic , educational and cultural institutions, to exchange ideas and to embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world ’s inhabitants. The program operates in more than 150 countries worldwide. To learn more about the Fulbright program, visit http://exchanges.state.gov, or contact Heidi Manley at (202) 453-8534.
