New Mural Commemorates Boise State University's 75th Anniversary, Unveiling on Aug. 22

A mural depicting 75 years of Boise State’s history will be unveiled at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 22 outside the Student Union Jordan Ballroom at Boise State University, followed by President Bob Kustra’s State of the University address.

The university commissioned Alma Gomez-Frith, a Boise State staff member and adjunct art professor, created the mural in honor of the anniversary of the school’s founding in 1932. The mural, which will eventually hang in the offices of University Advancement, is 7 feet 10 inches-by-12 feet. Gomez-Frith incorporated images from Boise State’s past and present into the mural, including former presidents, the first class of graduates in 1934, the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, the Administration Building (which was the first academic building on campus), students, and iconic Boise State images such as the “Spirit of the Broncos” sculpture on campus.

Gomez-Frith, an alumna with two master’s degrees from Boise State, has been working on the artwork since May 19. This is the second mural that Gomez-Frith has created for Boise State. The first, “Triumph of the Spirit,” hangs in the Education Building.

Events to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of Boise Junior College, Boise State University’s parent institution, will continue until Sept. 6. For more information on 75th anniversary events, visit www.boisestate.edu/diamondyear.
