Boise State to Begin Academic Year with Events in Conjunction with 75th Anniversary Celebration

Boise State will start the 2007-08 academic year with a bit more fanfare than usual as the university begins the celebration of its 75th anniversary with a series of public events next week. The festivities include the unveiling of a mural commemorating the university’s diamond jubilee on Aug. 22 and the official opening of the new Interactive Learning Center Aug. 23.

Other highlights include President Bob Kustra’s State of the University address Aug. 22, move-in day for students Aug. 24, and the first day of classes Aug. 27. Here is a look at next week’s schedule at Boise State:

August 22
• At 9:45 a.m. on the second floor of the Student Union, Boise State will unveil a historical mural created by BSU art professor Alma Gomez-Frith commemorating the university’s founding in 1932. After its unveiling, the 7-foot, 10-inch by 12-foot painting will be permanently hung in the offices of University Advancement.

• At 10 a.m. President Kustra will deliver his State of the University address to a staff and faculty convocation in the Jordan Ballroom of the Student Union. In his address, Kustra is expected to share some of his observations following the 2007 spring and summer semesters and discuss his plans for the upcoming academic year and beyond. He is also expected to announce the formal kickoff and targeted amount of the university’s comprehensive fundraising campaign.

August 23
• Beginning at 1:15 p.m. the university will dedicate both the Interactive Learning Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning, which will be housed in the ILC, with an opening ceremony that will include remarks by Kustra, associate vice president for campus planning and facilities James Maguire, Center for Teaching and Learning director Susan Shadle and others.

• At 2 p.m. activities will continue with a guest lecture by Charles Glassick titled “Teaching, Learning and Scholarship ... All One Continuum,” in the ILC’s first-floor lecture hall. Glassick is a senior associate emeritus of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and co-author of “Scholarship Assessed: Evaluation of the Professoriate.”

• The day’s events will conclude with a Center for Teaching and Learning grand opening reception and tours from 3-5 p.m. The ILC is located next to the Multipurpose Classroom Building on the west end of campus.

August 24
• Beginning at 9 a.m., more than 1,000 students will begin to move into their new on-campus homes. The university will provide the newcomers with refreshments throughout the day and “moving day” for the new residents and their parents will culminate in a dinner in the Student Union, where university officials will welcome the students. The six on-campus residential halls — Keiser, Taylor, Chaffee, Driscoll and Morrison near the east end of campus and Barnes Towers on the west end — and three buildings in the University Square apartment complex will house 1,492 students in shared and single rooms.

• From 5-7 p.m. an opening reception will be held for the “Then & Now” historical photo exhibit that will be on display in the Student Union Gallery. The exhibit will be on display from Aug. 22-Sept. 19.

August 27
• Enrollment at Boise State is expected to approach 19,000 as the first day of the fall 2007 semester gets under way a week from Monday.
