Multicultural Education Expert Christine Sleeter to Speak at Boise State University Sept. 4-5

Christine Sleeter, one of the leading voices in multicultural education, will give presentations open to undergraduate and graduate education students on Sept. 4-5 at Boise State University. Her appearance is sponsored by the Department of Bilingual Education in the College of Education.

“Intellectually Challenging Teaching in Multicultural Classrooms” is geared toward undergraduate students and will be from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Student Union Jordan A Ballroom. “Teaching for Democracy in an Age of Corporatocracy,” for graduate students, will be from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Student Union Barnwell Room. Both presentations are free and open to the public.

Sleeter is a professor emerita in the College of Professional Studies at California State University- Monterey Bay. Sleeter lectures nationally and internationally and her research focuses on anti-racist multicultural education and multicultural teacher education. Her articles have appeared in publications such as “Review of Research in Education,” “Journal of Teacher Education,” “Teacher Education Quarterly” and “Social Justice.”

Her most recent books include “Facing Accountability in Education: Democracy and Equity at Risk,” “Doing Multicultural Education for Achievement and Equity,” written with Carl Grant, “Un-Standardizing Curriculum,” “Culture, Difference and Power,” “Multicultural Education as Social Activism” and “Turning on Learning” with Grant.

Sleeter has received numerous awards for her work, including the California State University-Monterey Bay President’s Medal, the National Association for Multicultural Education Research Award, and the AERA Committee on the Role and Status of Minorities in Education Distinguished Scholar Award.
