BSU Dean Jim Girvan Named an Idaho Health Care Hero
Jim Girvan, dean and professor of the College of Health Sciences at Boise
State University, was named a Health Care Hero by the Idaho Business Review.
Girvan received his award in the category of Health Care Educator at a Sept.
20 dinner.

Girvan came to Boise State in 1999 from Idaho State University where he was
a professor and department chair. He is a nationally recognized authority on
community health and health education. In addition to his duties as dean, he
serves or has served as a board member for the Family Medicine Residency of
Idaho, Idaho KIDS Count, the Mission Committee of Saint Alphonsus Regional
Medical Center, the Health Community Access Grand Advisory Committee and the
Area Health Education Center. He regularly reviews articles for the American
Journal of Health Education and the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Education,
and has co-authored a recently released health promotion textbook. In 2006,
the Idaho Association of Educational Office Professionals named him
Administrator of the Year.
Nominators Sara Toevs and Pam Springer noted Girvan’s 20-plus years of
experience in education and research and his efforts to improve
campus-community partnerships.

For the 10th time in the last 11 years, Boise State University has set an
all-time record for Idaho higher education institutions with an enrollment
of 19,540 – an overall increase of 3.5 percent. A record freshman class of
2,280 students is also the most academically talented group ever to enter
Boise State, including 12 National Merit finalists.
