Irene Wilcox Lecture Series at Boise State Focuses on
Bi-Polar Depression
The School of Social Work at Boise State University presents the second
annual Irene Wilcox Lecture Series from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Special
Events Center at the Student Union. The event is open to the public and is
free for students with valid ID. For those who register, lunch will be
provided and CEUs are available. Call 426-1568 or visit

The topic of this year's lecture is “Bi-Polar Depression: Gift or
Affliction?” The daylong workshop features a presentation by Dr. Jayne
Stevenson, a video by Dr. Richard Kogan and an open discussion including
case presentations with experts in the field of bi-polar depression.
Stevenson is a graduate of the University of Western Australia and has an
ongoing practice in psychiatry in Boise. She is a diplomat of the American
Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a member of the Idaho Medical
Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American
Psychosomatic Society. She has worked as a consultant with a variety of
programs and agencies and has presented on a wide variety of subjects. Her
clinical interests include end of life issues, psycho-oncology, HIV and
cross-cultural issues in psychiatry and illness behavior.
Kogan has a distinguished career both as a psychiatrist and as a concert
pianist. A graduate of Juilliard, Harvard College and Harvard Medical
School, he is a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City and is
affiliated with Weill-Cornell Medical Center as director of its Human
Sexuality Program. He has done groundbreaking work on the connection between
music and the mind in a series of lecture/performances that explore how the
psychiatric illnesses of the great composers influenced their creative
output.
