Boise State Service-Learning Program Receives Two Federal
Grants to Help Engage Local Youth in the Community
The Boise State University Service-Learning program has received two federal
grants totaling $34,125 to increase the civic engagement of youth through
service-learning.
The first grant will develop and implement strategies to generate greater
support for service-learning among educators, policy-makers and community
leaders, as well as promote service-learning in teacher education programs.
The second grant will build partnerships between Boise State’s
service-learning program and K-12 schools to assist college students in
providing academic enrichment activities to disadvantaged youth.
Service-learning is a teaching method that connects coursework to community
issues, giving students real-world experience in their field while meeting
pressing community needs. As part of their coursework, students work in
community organizations to address issues of poverty, the environment,
public health, and more. During the past academic year, 1,785 students from
89 Boise State classes engaged in service-learning, contributing 36,453
hours of service with 75 community organizations. In 2006, 23 percent of all
graduating seniors had taken courses that incorporated service-learning
experiences.
Boise State was one of 11 universities to receive funding through Washington
Campus Compact’s “Count Me In: Learning and Serving for School Success”
program in Washington and Idaho. The funds are part of a Learn and Serve
America Higher Education grant from the Corporation for National & Community
Service. The CNCS is the nation’s largest grant-maker supporting service and
volunteering.
