BSU Talkin' Broncos Kick Off Season with Decisive Win at CSI
Tournament
The Boise State speech and debate team kicked off its 2007-2008 season with
a dominating performance at the Golden Eagle Invitational Sept. 28-29 at the
College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. The Talkin’ Broncos won 21
individual events and took home the first place sweepstakes award.
Three of Boise state’s six two-member debate teams reached the tournament
quarterfinals. Hillary Taresh (sophomore, Pocatello) and Hanna Vinson
(junior, Afton, Wyo.) advanced from quarterfinals and placed as
semi-finalists. Sean Watson (senior, Kimberly) and Regan Charlton
(sophomore, Inkom) advanced from semi-finals and won second place overall.
The team of Chad Judy (senior, Idaho Falls) and Ben Bishop (junior,
Meridian) received quarterfinalist awards. Judy was named the outstanding
debater in senior division, followed by Watson as runner-up. Kate Henry
(sophomore, Coeur d’Alene), Taresh and Ben Larsen (freshman, Raft River)
were also recognized as three of the top ten debaters at the tournament.
In individual events, Judy led the Talkin’ Broncos in scoring with
first-place finishes in Extemporaneous Speaking and Communication Analysis.
Other first-place finishes included Taresh in Informative Speaking and
Shanna Hagenah (sophomore, Asotin, Wash.) in Oral Interpretation of Poetry.
Top award winners for Boise State were Charlton, who placed second in
Extemporaneous Speaking, third in Informative Speaking and fourth in Oral
Interpretation of Poetry; Henry, who placed second in Interpretation of
Drama and third in Interpretation of Prose; Watson, who placed second in
Informative Speaking and third in Extemporaneous Speaking; Debra Groberg
(freshman, Idaho Falls) who placed second in Impromptu Speaking; Bishop, who
placed second in Communication Analysis; and Vinson, who was third in
Program Oral Interpretation.
The Talkin’ Broncos shut out nine other schools in two events, placing
first, second and third in both Extemporaneous Speaking and Informative
Speaking. The team continues on to Portland, Ore., for the Lewis & Clark
Pioneer Tournament on Oct. 12.

all-time record for Idaho higher education institutions with an enrollment
