Helen Caldicott to Speak at Boise State on Nuclear Power

Dr. Helen Caldicott will speak at Boise State University at 7 pm. Oct. 23 in the Special Events Center. Caldicott is the author of “Nuclear Power is Not the Answer.” Admission is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the parking garage at University and Lincoln.

“Nuclear Power is Not the Answer” looks at all aspects of generating power through nuclear plants, including carbon emitted in its creation, its costs and its risks. Caldicott suggests alternate energy sources, such as wind power, and simple lifestyle changes, such as hanging clothes to dry and turning down the thermostat to help solve the energy crisis.

Caldicott has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institute as one of the most influential women of the 20th century. An Australian pediatric physician, she is a passionate advocate for citizen action on nuclear and environmental issues. Caldicott co-founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, founded Women’s Action for Nuclear Disarmament, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Nobel laureate Linus Pauling. She has been awarded 19 honorary doctoral degrees and in 2003 was awarded the Lannan Foundation Prize for Cultural Freedom. She also was presented with the inaugural Australia Peace Prize by the Peace Organization of Australia.

Caldicott’s visit is co-sponsored by the Boise State Department of Sociology.
