BSU and CDHD Team Up to Analyze Public Health Services
Boise State University's Center for Health Policy and the Central District
Health Department have teamed up to assess three CDHD public health services
offered in the area. Sarah Toevs, chair of the Department of Community and
Environmental Health and associate dean of the College of Health Sciences,
and Lee Hannah, assistant professor in the Department of Community and
Environmental Health, are co-principal investigators.
Investigators, in partnership with CDHD staff, will look at the market
supply and demand characteristics for three services: immunizations; family
planning and sexually transmitted diseases; and women, infant and children
services. Toevs and Hannah will utilize GIS technology to examine census and
CDHD data and information from providers and clients to identify current and
future needs.
Recommendations for how CDHD can meet any unmet public health needs related
to these areas will then be provided.
The findings of this study will provide Central District Health and its
Board of Health with a dynamic, visual representation of needs and
opportunities for use in program management and strategic planning. This
effort extends the use of local, state and national data and could serve as
a model for other health districts throughout the state.
“Working with professionals from the health district is a pleasure,” said
Toevs. “It is rewarding to help them explore new ways of providing service
and achieve their goal of enhancing the quality of life for all.
“This partnership demonstrates the value of community engagement — it
provides the university with authentic learning and research opportunities
and supports and enhances the delivery of health and human services in our
community.”
