Grant to Idaho Public Health Association Aids BSU Graduate Research

Boise State University has received three years of funding for a graduate research assistantship through a grant from the American Public Health Association (APHA). The $90,000 three-year grant was awarded to the Idaho Public Health Association as one of 25 grants totaling more than $2 million.

The focus of the Boise State graduate research assistantship will be twofold: 1) to work with colleges and universities throughout Idaho in support of public health education and 2) to work with public health organizations to support the development of evidence-based public health policy.

“This is another great example of how partnering with the community maximizes the resources we have here at Boise State University,” said Sarah Toevs, chair of the Department of Community and Environmental Health and associate dean of the College of Health Sciences.

“Our affiliated public health associations are not only essential to the work of APHA, but they also play a crucial role in protecting public health across our nation,” said Georges C. Benjamin, executive director of APHA. “With a variety of pressing health concerns facing Americans, it is imperative that our affiliates have the infrastructure required to meet the needs of those in their communities.”

These resources provide the Idaho Public Health Association, in partnership with Boise State University and public health professionals throughout the state, with the means to enhance and protect the quality of life residents enjoy in Idaho.

The APHA grants were part of a $5.9 million grant received from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in 2006.
