BSU Talkin' Broncos Beat Out 29 Schools to Win at Pioneer
Invitational Tourney
The Boise State University speech and debate team continued its successful
season with another win at the Lewis & Clark Pioneer Invitational in
Portland, Ore. The Talkin’ Broncos received 11 awards in individual events
and won first place in sweepstakes.
From a field of more than 100 debate teams, three of Boise State’s teams
reached the tournament finals. Hanna Vinson (junior, Afton, Wyo.) and
Debra Groberg (freshman, Idaho Falls) were named tournament finalists
in junior division. In novice Parliamentary Debate, Emil Huseynov
(junior, Azerbaijain) and Erik Sande (junior, Boise) advanced to
quarterfinals. Sean Watson (senior, Kimberly) and his debate partner
also advanced to quarterfinals. Sande was recognized as one of the
top 10 novice debaters, while Chad Judy (senior, Idaho Falls) was
named as one of the top 20 debaters in senior competition.
In individual events, Regan Charlton (sophomore, Inkom) led the
Talkin’ Broncos in scoring with a first-place finish in Informative Speaking
and finalist awards in Oral Interpretation of Poetry and Communication
Analysis. Other first place finishes included Watson, who was named
top senior competitor in Informative Speaking, and Alex Dorofeev
(junior, Murmansk, Russia) in Impromptu Speaking. Top award winners for
Boise State were Judy, who placed second in Communication Analysis
and fourth in Impromptu Speaking; Ben Bishop (junior, Meridian), who
took second place in senior Informative Speaking; Hillary Taresh
(sophomore, Pocatello), who placed fourth in Oral Interpretation of Prose
and was named a finalist in Persuasive Speaking; and Groberg, who was
a finalist in Informative Speaking.
The Talkin’ Broncos competed with 29 schools over three days to win the
tournament sweepstakes award. The next competition will be Oct. 26–27 at the
College of Idaho Coyote Classic in Caldwell.

For the 10th time in the last 11 years, Boise State University has set an
all-time record for Idaho higher education institutions with an enrollment
of 19,540 – an overall increase of 3.5 percent. A
record freshman class of 2,280 students is also the most academically
talented group ever to enter Boise State, including 12 National Merit
finalists.
