Boise State Environmental and Occupational Health Students
Participate in Regional Competition
Four seniors in Boise State University’s Environmental and Occupational
Health Program recently participated in an annual team competition aimed at
identifying solutions to a real-world environmental problem. The Boise State
Scents and Sensibility team, comprised of Leah Arnold, John Hansen,
Kim Johnson and Karl Schultz, won $300 for their effort. The competition was
sponsored by the Pacific Northwest section of the Air and Waste Management
Association and was held in conjunction with the section’s annual
conference.
This year’s conference took place Oct. 17-19 at the Doubletree Hotel in
Boise. The Boise State team competed against student teams (including some
graduate students) from the University of Montana, Montana Tech, Huxley
College and Western Washington University.
At the start of the competition, each team was presented with the same
scenario: a long-standing rural rendering plant that is being confronted
with encroaching suburban development and a recent but dramatic increase in
odor and water contamination complaints from local residents. Each team
developed solutions to these environmental issues and presented them in
front of a panel of judges comprised of environmental experts.
Team members are students of Community and Environmental Health professor
Dale Stephenson.
