BSU Talkin' Broncos Dominate Coyote Classic Tourney at College of Idaho

The Boise State speech and debate team continued its undefeated season with another win at the College of Idaho’s inaugural Coyote Classic in Caldwell. The Talkin’ Broncos dominated a field of 12 schools from Utah, Montana, Oregon and Idaho, receiving 21 awards in individual events and advancing five teams to the final rounds of the debate competition.

Hanna Vinson (junior, Afton, Wyo.) and Debra Groberg (freshman, Idaho Falls) advanced through seven rounds of competition to claim the tournament championship in senior division debate. The teams of Ben Bishop (junior, Meridian) and Hillari Taresh (sophomore, Pocatello) and Sean Watson (senior, Kimberly) and Kate Henry (sophomore, Coeur d’Alene) advanced to the tournament semifinals. Quarterfinalists included the senior division team of Chad Judy (senior, Idaho Falls) and Regan Charlton (sophomore, Inkom), and novice division team of Alex Dorofeev (junior, Murmansk, Russia) and Ben Larsen (freshman, Raft River). Judy, Charlton, Groberg, Vinson and Watson each received individual recognition as one of the top 10 debaters at the tournament.

In individual events, Taresh led the Talkin’ Broncos in scoring with a first-place finish in Informative Speaking, a first-place finish in Speech to Entertain and a second-place finish in Persuasive Speaking. Judy also received two first-place awards in Communication Analysis and Impromptu Speaking, as well as a third-place award in Extemporaneous Speaking. Henry received first-place awards in both Oral Interpretation of Prose and Oral Interpretation of Drama, and a finalist award in Persuasive Speaking. Charlton was awarded first place in Oral Interpretation of Poetry, and placed second in both Communication Analysis and Informative Speaking. Other top award winners for Boise State were Bishop, who placed third in Communication Analysis and was a finalist in Informative Speaking; Emil Huseynov (junior, Azerbaijan), who placed third in both Impromptu Speaking and Persuasive Speaking; Adam Siler (freshman, Meridian), who placed second in Persuasive Speaking; Larsen, who placed third in Oral Interpretation of Poetry; Dorofeev, who placed fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking; Watson, who was a finalist in Informative Speaking; and Erik Sande (junior, Boise), who was a finalist in Impromptu Speaking.

Next week, the Talkin’ Broncos travel to McMinnville, Ore., for the 77th annual Mahaffey Memorial Forensics Tournament at Linfield College.
