Visiting Fulbright Scholar Kevin Kiely Celebrates U.S. Edition of Book with Launch Party at Boise State

Kevin Kiely, a Fulbright Scholar at Boise State University, will celebrate the launch of the United States edition of his book of poetry, “Breakfast with Sylvia,” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 29 in the Hemingway Center on campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Kiely, a native of Northern Ireland, is a Fulbright Scholar in Residence at Boise State for the 2007-2008 academic year. His critically acclaimed works include two books of poetry — including “Breakfast with Sylvia,” which was originally published in Ireland in 2005 — four novels, two plays and one biography.

Fellow poet Anthony Cronin calls “Breakfast with Sylvia,” “lyrical, original, faithful to the moment and its joys but with an undertone of sometimes rueful experience — these are the poems of a man who has come through.” The book received the Patrick Kavanagh Fellowship Award in 2006. Kiely’s poetry has appeared in “The Edinburgh Review,” “Poetry Ireland Review,” “Foolscap,” “The Black Mountain Review,” “Cork Literary Review,” and a number of other anthologies.

Kiely comes to Boise State from University College Dublin. He is the College of Arts and Sciences’ first Fulbright Scholar in Residence.

“Kevin Kiely’s presence on the Boise State campus has been a wonderful asset for students and faculty, and we are grateful to the Fulbright Commission for making it possible,” said Helen Lojek, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “His experience as a poet, playwright and literary analyst allows him to bring a European perspective to both graduate and undergraduate classes — his Irish accent illuminates not only the cadences of the literature he discusses, but also a perspective we do not often have the privilege of encountering in Boise. His wide-ranging skills in poetry, drama and biographical writing have provided a broad context for discussion as we work to internationalize our campus.”
