This Week at Boise State

EXHIBITION:
Through Dec. 12. “Hammered: Contemporary Ideas in Art Metal Design.” Student Union Gallery. This exhibition celebrates the multiple talents of student artists in the Boise State Art Metals Club. Free. Call 426-3994.

Dec. 15- Feb. 1. Juried High School Art Exhibition. Student Union Gallery. Featuring artwork by local high school students, selected by Department of Art chair Richard Young. Free.

Saturday, Dec. 1
Classic Performances Series. Special Events Center. 8 p.m. Featuring the Chris Norman Ensemble playing a program titled “The Caledonian Flute.” With everything from flute to bagpipe to guitar and mandolin, the Chris Norman Ensemble reaches across five centuries of traditional, Renaissance and baroque music. Headliners at international festivals and prestigious universities and music societies, they combine melodies of Scotland, Ireland and France with a powerful energy all their own. $12 general, $8 faculty, staff and alumni and $5 students and seniors. A December to Remember. Morrison Center. 7 p.m. Featuring youth from the Treasure Valley in grades 3-12. A musical review style production, based on the music of John Jacobson, “A December to Remember” runs approximately one hour. Christmas and winter themed songs include: “Winter Wipe Out,” “Tiny Little Miracles,” and “Christmas Tree Feud.” $10 through Select-a-Seat, the Morrison Center box office or www.IdahoTickets.com.  Presented by the Encore! Tuba Christmas. The Grove. 3:30 p.m. Tuba Christmas has been a tradition in many larger cities in the United States since its first performance in New York in 1974. For the past 15 years, Boise has been one of the few cities in the Northwest to present this unique concert. Members of Tuba Christmas are baritone, euphonium, sousaphone and tuba players of all ages and ability, from local high schools, as well as local band directors, Boise State students and community members. Now in its 15th year in Boise, Tuba Christmas has become an annual holiday tradition for the whole family. Another show will be performed at First Presbyterian Church at 4:30 p.m. Both performances are Free. For more information call 426-1685.

Sunday, Dec. 2
Family Holiday Concert. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. The whole family can enjoy the sounds of the holiday season during the Boise State Music Department’s annual Family Holiday Concert. This year’s concert will feature performances by the Faculty Brass Ensemble, the Flute Choir, the university choral groups, the Trombone Choir, Vocal Jazz and the University Orchestra. Highlights of the program include Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” and Prokofiev’s “Troika,” as well as Poulenc’s “Gloria,” one of the composer’s most celebrated works. $8 general, $6 seniors and $1 for students through Select-a-Seat, 426-1494 or www.idahotickets.com. Tuesday, Dec. 4
Choral Holiday Concert. Immanuel Lutheran Church, 707 W. Fort. St. 7:30 p.m. Featuring the University Singers, Vox Angelis, Vocal Jazz, Chamber Singers and the Meistersingers performing both old favorites and exciting contemporary works. $5 general, $3 seniors, free to Boise State students, faculty and staff. Lynn Marie Smith Lecture. Special Events Center. 7 p.m. Lynn Marie Smith will tell the horrors of her drug addiction in hopes that it will influence people in her situation to wise up. Inspired to help people, Lynn Marie Smith wrote “Rolling Away: My Agony With Ecstacy.” In the book she explains in great detail her perilous journey, from the spirals of addiction to losing almost everything. Thursday, Dec. 6

Dinner and a Movie. Table Rock Café. 6 p.m. The classic movie “A Christmas Story” is the tale of a boy named Ralphie and his pursuit to get a “Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot, Range Model Air Rifle with a compass in the stock, and this thing which tells time.” Free. Friday, Dec. 7
Student Chamber Music Recital. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 4 p.m. Featuring the music of Bartok, Haydn, Beethoven and Sibelius. For more information, call 426-3980.

Boise State University Student Dance Concert (Dec 7-8).
Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8. A concert of original students and faculty choreography presented by the Department of Theatre Arts. Tickets $5 general and $3 students at the door. For more information, call 426-3980.


Saturday, Dec. 8
Holidays Around the World. Hatch Ballroom. 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sample products from a variety of cultures at booths featuring crafts from all over the world, manned by student organizations and community members. Enjoy holiday cookies, punch, Santa Claus and karaoke on the main stage. Presented by the Cultural Center. Free. Call 426-5950.

Family night at the basketball game. Taco Bell Arena. 7 p.m. Bring your family to this big basketball game as Boise State battles Loyola Marymount. There will be a special section for families to enjoy this exciting game. Students must pick up their own ticket, but they can pick up voucher tickets for any other members of the family at the Information Desk. During half time, the Blue Room will be reserved for free food and drinks. There will also be an autograph signing after the game for the families. For more information, call 426-4636.

Thursday. Dec. 13
“Good Luck Chuck.” Lookout Room. 7 p.m. Chuck (played by Dane Cook) doesn’t have a problem getting women. It’s keeping them that is the problem. Chuck is cursed with an unusual problem. When he sleeps with a woman, the next man that she meets will be her true love. When Chuck finds himself falling in love, he has to find a way to break the curse. Rated R for sequences of strong sexual content including crude dialogue, nudity, language and some drug use. Free; free popcorn and soda will also be available. Sponsored by Student Programs Board. Ballet Idaho’s Performance of the “Nutcracker.” Morrison Center. 8 p.m. Dec.14; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Dec 15; 2 p.m. Dec. 16. Come join the cherished tradition of watching the Ballet Idaho as they perform the “Nutcracker.” Joining the performance will be the Capital City Children’s Chorus, Opera Idaho’s Children’s Chorus, the Boise Philharmonic and a spirited new cast of little mice, angels and dragons. $10-$45 through Select-a-Seat, Morrison Center box office or www.idahotickets.com. Clay and Fire Ceramics Sale. Visual Arts Gallery 1. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. This semiannual sale features ceramics make by Boise State art students, faculty and alumni. From eclectic to elegant to exotic, the show will have dozens of unique pieces. A portion of the proceeds benefits Boise State’s Visiting Artists in Ceramics program. Boise State University professor Heidi Reeder has been named the 2007 Idaho Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. She is an associate professor in the Department of Communication. Reeder’s honor marks the 11th time that a Boise State professor has earned this award, and the seventh time in the last decade.
