News Release STUDENT ACTIVITIES NEWS / November 19, 2008 Boise State University Marks World AIDS Day with Memorial Quilt Display, Vigil and Lecture Boise State University will mark World AIDS Day with a series of campus events from Dec. 1-5. All events are free and open to the public. • The AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display from Dec. 1-4 in the Student Union Hatch B Ballroom. Three 12 x 12 panels will be on display, each featuring personalized, individual quilt squares created by the loved ones of someone who has died of AIDS-related causes. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is maintained by the NAMES Project Foundation. • An AIDS Vigil will be held at 8 p.m. Dec. 1 in Ann Morrison Park. • Red AIDS Awareness Ribbons will be available from Dec. 1-5 at the offices of Health, Wellness and Counseling Services, Student Activities, the Student Union Info Desk, New Student and Family Programs, the Cultural Center, the Women’s Center, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities and University Housing. • Rapid HIV Testing will be will available from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Student Union Ah Fong Room. The testing is free and confidential and provided by Health, Wellness and Counseling Services and a.l.p.h.a. (Allies Linked for the Prevention of HIV and AIDS). • Duane Quintana, executive director of a.l.p.h.a., will talk about the personal experiences of people with HIV/AIDS and discuss ways to prevent the spread of the disease. Quintana’s lecture will be from 6-7 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Student Union Jordan B Ballroom. World AIDS Day is on Dec. 1 and has been marked annually since 1988. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Approximately 33 million are living with HIV worldwide, including 1 million Americans. About 25 percent are unaware of their status. Boise State’s activities are the result of a partnership between Student Activities, a.l.p.h.a. and Health, Wellness and Counseling Services.
