News Release MEDIA ADVISORY/ November 20, 2008 Media Advisory What: Thanksgiving cookie bake for soldiers on the front lines in Iraq and local homeless and senior citizens Who: Boise State University student volunteers When: 5-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 Where: Student Union Building kitchen, 1910 University Drive This Friday, the Student Union Building kitchen at Boise State University will be full of cookie dough, students and holiday spirit. Volunteers from across campus will bake and package “love and appreciation” for troops in Iraq and homeless and elderly people right here in Boise. “The idea is to share and to give,” said Sudhir Goyal, adviser to Boise State’s Indian Student Association (ISA) and father to ISA president and Engineering Honor Society (EHS) member, Shatakshi Goyal, who organized the inaugural cookie bake in March. “We had a family friend in Iraq, and as a student here I felt I should express my love and appreciation for soldiers on the front lines, who allow us to feel so free and safe,” Shatakshi Goyal said. “It was about doing valuable community service and giving love.” The volunteer kitchen crew included students from ISA and EHS as well as the Vietnamese Student Association, the Nepalese Student Association and the Organization for Gender Equality & Education. And the “fun” resulted in more than 1,500 cookies delivered to a military base in Texas and to soldiers in Iraq. “We heard that all of the cookies were gone in 10 minutes. They weren’t short on cookies, but they were feeling the love and the appreciation,” Sudhir Goyal said. Shatakshi Goyal said the motivating force behind the event was Janet Callahan, EHS adviser, professor and associate dean for academic affairs in Boise State’s College of Engineering. Callahan encouraged the expansion of the cookie bake to local people in need, and the student crew is planning to make Thanksgiving drop-offs to a senior center and the Boise Rescue Mission. “The main thing is how you integrate with the community,” Sudhir Goyal said.
