Partners In Excellence
Boise State has benefitted from a long tradition of philanthropy that has provided support for buildings, scholarships and other programs that would not have otherwise been possible. Since 1999, the university recorded several large gifts and a growing number of donors.
Boise State University Foundation
The foundations permanent assets stood at
$71.5 million at the end of the 2001 fiscal year. That total is almost double the assets that were in place five years ago. During the 1999-2001 period covered in this report, the Foundation and Development office recorded several accomplishments:
The Boise State University Foundation was one of 57 organizations recognized nationally for fund-raising improvement by the Council for the Support and Advancement of Education.
Phonathon 2000, conducted by the Development Office, passed the $240,000 mark for the first time. More than 3,360 alumni and friends made pledges during the month-long phone campaign in October 2000. Overall, the Annual Fund set a new record by generating $382,793, an 8 percent increase over the previous year.
The Foundation received a $1 million gift to create an international center designed to promote statistical methods in science and engineering. The gift from John Parker Burg established the Edwin T. Jaynes International Center for Bayesian Methods and Maximum Entropy.
Following a capital campaign by the Foundation, two new engineering buildings the Harry W. Morrison Civil Engineering Building and the Micron Engineering Center opened in spring 2000. The lead gift ($6 million) came from Micron Technology. Other major contributors included the Harry W. Morrison Foundation ($2 million) and the Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation ($1 million).
The Foundation led a drive to expand the Boise State Childrens Center, which provides care for children of Boise State students and staff. The expansion is made possible through the gifts of the Angora Ridge Foundation, the Boise State Bookstore, the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation and the Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation.
Bronco Athletic Association, Inc.
The BAA promotes excellence in athletics through the fund-raising support it provides the department of intercollegiate athletics. Among the associations recent highlights are the following:
The BAA raised more than $2.4 million in 2000-01. The association provided $1.2 million in scholarship support during that time. As of
June 30, 2001, the scholarship endowment was $7.7 million.
Association membership is at an all-time high, with more than 2,600 members contributing.
The association purchased the former Idaho Sports Medicine Institute building and remodeled the interior to serve as the Bronco Football Complex.
Auction 2001, conducted jointly with the Alumni Association, raised net proceeds of $270,000 to help fund scholarships and the new Alumni Center. Since 1983, the biennial auctions have raised more than $2.3 million.
Construction began in July 2001 on The Steve Appleton Outdoor Tennis Complex, a new facility that includes six courts, bleachers, offices, and locker rooms for Boise States mens and womens tennis teams. Micron chief executive Steve Appleton was the lead donor for the project.
Alumni Association
The Alumni Association, which sponsors a variety of programs and services for alumni, recorded a landmark accomplishment in April 2001 when it opened the new Boise State Alumni Center. The former eye clinic was renovated to include new reception and meeting areas for alumni, as well as offices for the alumni relations staff. The association raised $1 million to purchase and renovate the building, which also is home to the Boise State Career Center. Other highlights include:
The number of dues-paying alumni continues to increase. Revenue from dues increased more than $20,000 during 2001.
The association began a new lifetime membership program, which attracted 23 members in the first six months.
The association hosted more than 35 events in 2000-01, ranging from pre-game socials in the fall to the Top Ten Scholars and Distinguished Alumni Banquet and Graduation Celebration in the spring.
