Only 7-13 percent of eligible youth in foster care will enroll in post-secondary education, and those who do face a degree completion rate of less than 3 percent.

Students who spend time in foster care as teens face tremendous barriers to attending college, and even greater ones trying to reach graduation. Only 7-13 percent of eligible youth in foster care will enroll in post-secondary education, and those who do face a degree completion rate of less than 3 percent.

Former foster youth often lack supportive adults in their lives, may not have a driver’s license or financial support other than student aid, have no family or home to return to during school breaks and holidays and lack stable housing.

Anna Moreshead, a master’s student in Boise State’s School of Social Work, is spearheading a project aimed at helping foster alums succeed.

“As a community, we still don’t fully understand what this population is facing in terms of barriers,” she said. “But we know that they are staggering.”

As part of an internship, Moreshead is working with the School of Social Work, the Office of the Dean of Students, Casey Family Programs, and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare to offer support to Boise State students who have previously spent time in foster care.

In the short term, Moreshead is providing consistent in-person support to former foster youth attending Boise State, monitoring their progress and incorporating support systems already in place, such as student clubs, tutoring help and counseling services.

She also has researched more formal programs, such as the nationally recognized Guardian Scholars Program, and hopes to lay the groundwork for future development of a program at Boise State that could provide scholarship assistance, housing, academic advisement, employment services, mentoring and more.

“Foster youth are often times first generation college students,” said Falen LeBlanc, an Independent Living Program Specialist at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. “They have little to no support to help then navigate and persevere through what can be a new and difficult experience for them socially, educationally and emotionally.”

LeBlanc believes that most former foster youth see themselves going to college and earning a degree.

“I believe it to be the ultimate dream of most foster youth,” she said. “As a state agency we have been able to help foster youth get through the doors of a college and in the classroom but we have not been able to build a community around them to support them through the process.”

The ultimate goal is graduation and a degree so that foster youth can establish a successful life for themselves, Moreshead said.

The awards are sponsored by University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) and Boise State’s International Learning Opportunities.

Summer 2013 FIDA recipients are as follows. Specific study abroad locations will be assigned in January.

Blaine Eckles, Office of the Dean of Students

Sara Fry, Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Foundational Studies

Clyde Moneyhun, Department of English

Lauren Rice, Office of Admissions

FIDA awardees will participate in summer language programs as students. No previous language study is required. There is an expectation that recipients will assist with the promotion of study abroad upon their return to campus. FIDAs give brown bag presentations about their experiences during International Education Week every fall.

They also attend the annual study abroad fair (held in February) and meet with interested students about their experiences. FIDAs regularly invite the education abroad staff to speak in staff meetings and visit classes to promote study abroad to students, faculty and staff. Additional information is located here.

Admission is free.

“Love Etc.: Five Real Stories, One Big City” is a witty, poignant and humorous exploration of the universal stages of love, depicted through five real stories over the course of one year in New York City. Young, old, gay, straight – everyone has experienced love and the joy and frustration that come with it.

From teen romance to a decades-long marriage, newlyweds to a recent divorcee, and even a bachelor so frustrated in his search that he chooses to have children without a partner, “Love Etc.” documents the intimate journeys of engaging characters ages 18-89 who reflect the city’s diversity and takes an honest look at life’s most challenging pursuit.

A 30-minute discussion about relationships and communication will follow the film.
