Boise State Club Sports will be featured as the “Student Showcase” at halftime of the Bronco football game against New Mexico on Dec. 3 at Bronco Stadium.

Boise State Club Sports will be featured as the “Student Showcase” at halftime of the Bronco football game against New Mexico on Dec. 3 at Bronco Stadium. Representatives from nearly 30 club sports will be wearing their uniforms or displaying equipment from their activity as they take to the blue.

Club sports at Boise State include angling, baseball, bowling, cycling, ice hockey, judo, karate, krav maga, kung fu, lacrosse, paintball, racquetball, rodeo, rugby, snowboard and skiing, soccer, softball, taekwondo, track and field, triathlon, ultimate, volleyball, wakeboard and waterskiing, water polo and wrestling.

The Club Sports program is designed to serve the individual or groups of students who share a common interest in sports. The objective of the program is to offer activities for students who wish to participate and develop skills in a particular sport. Depending on the sport, there is an opportunity for an instructional and/or competitive experience against other universities and clubs.

The Club Sports program also is a great arena for leadership and management development. Club Sports feature student athletes who are led and managed by other student athletes. They learn to negotiate equipment purchases and contractual agreements with venues, coaches and officials. They organize and coordinate a season’s worth of practices, games, flights and hotel accommodations. They must raise funds, solicit donors and sponsors, and balance their budgets. They participate in community service projects.

In the past seven years, the Club Sports program has experienced tremendous growth from 16 sports and 170 student athletes to as many as 36 sports and 420 student athletes. The participants are not on scholarship, but they are recruited from all over the United States and Canada. The teams often have multiple coaches, join leagues or conferences, and wear the blue and orange of Boise State.

The “Student Showcase” has been part of every halftime program this football season. Other highlighted groups have been new students, participants in Parent and Family Weekend, Alumni Legacy Scholars, campus military programs and services, and international students.

International students will demonstrate the global reach of Boise State University at halftime of the Bronco football game against Wyoming on Nov. 26 at Bronco Stadium. Kickoff is at noon.

Bronco World, instead of Bronco Nation, will be the theme of this week’s “Student Showcase” as international students parade on the blue waving either their country’s flag or a Bronco flag to signify their unity as Boise State students.

The university welcomed 78 international freshmen this fall, an increase of 200 percent and evidence of the university’s growing global recognition. Overall, Boise State has 443 international students, coming from Canada, Saudi Arabia, India, Japan, Nepal, China, Germany and beyond.

International Student Services (ISS) at Boise State provides comprehensive support services to international students as they integrate into the larger campus community and serves as the primary source of expertise regarding immigration and cross-cultural issues for the campus at-large. ISS acts as a welcoming center where international student needs can be met directly, or referred to the appropriate university or community resource.

The final “Student Showcase” of the football season will feature the Club Sports Program on Dec. 3 (New Mexico). Previous highlighted groups have been new students, participants in Parent and Family Weekend, Alumni Legacy Scholars and campus military programs and services.

Current and present members of the military will be recognized at two events at Boise State Nov. 11 and 12.

Current and present members of the military will be recognized at two events at Boise State Nov. 11 and 12. A Veterans Day ceremony will recognize Idaho’s fallen on Nov. 11 and the Department of Military Science and student veterans will be highlighted at halftime of the Boise State-TCU football game on Nov. 12.

An estimated 1,700 students on campus — one out of every 12 —and 600 faculty and staff are active soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, veterans of the U.S. military or among several hundred dependents and spouses of veterans who are eligible for federal benefits under recent versions of the G.I. Bill.

Boise State will honor the sacrifice of our servicemen and women with a Veterans Day ceremony featuring a reading of the names of those from Idaho who have died in the service of their country in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade.

The ceremony will be held in the south end zone of Bronco Stadium at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11. The event is free and open to the public. Those attending are asked to enter the stadium through the Allen Noble Hall of Fame. Parking for the event will be available in the west stadium parking lot.

Immediately following the main ceremony, a reception and dedication of Boise State’s new Veterans Services Center will be held in the Alumni Center at 1173 University Drive, just across University Drive from Bronco Stadium. The new center provides a central location for the more than 2,200 student veterans at Boise State to find veteran services and gather.

Speakers include Boise State President Bob Kustra; student body president Brandie VanOrder and student body vice president Eric Schuler; and Jim Vance, director of the Department of Veterans Affairs regional office.

In addition, the university’s Department of Military Science and student veterans will be highlighted at halftime of the Boise State-TCU football game on Nov. 12 at Bronco Stadium. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

Known as the “Student Showcase,” up to three dozen students representing senior cadets from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps and a group of veterans, who are excelling as students, athletes and leaders, will be recognized on the blue field. The game recognition comes the day after Veterans Day remembrances on Nov. 11.

The Alumni Legacy Scholars will be honored at halftime of the Boise State-Air Force football game on Oct. 22 at Bronco Stadium as part of the Homecoming festivities.

Presented by the Boise State Alumni Association, the “Student Showcase” spotlights students who are relatives of Boise State alumni and have earned a four-year renewable scholarship. The five 2011 recipients are Frances May, Moses Lake, Wash.; Molly Hezeltine, Meridian; Spencer Berg, Meridian; Alex Ridgeway, Twin Falls; and Candace Claiborne, Eagle.

They are joined by seven other Boise State students currently attending school with the help of the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. Those past honorees are Katie Manning, Port Angeles, Wash.; Chase Forrey, Boise; Macaile Hutt, Meridian; Sydne Jackson, Boise; Caitlyn O’Very, Nampa; Daniel Patchin, Boise; and Ariel Strasser, Boise.

High school seniors interested in applying for an Alumni Legacy Scholarship need to start preparing their material. The 2012 deadline to hand in the completed application to the Alumni Center is Feb. 15, 2012.

The four-year renewable scholarship pays recipients the equivalent of in-state fees for fall and spring semesters. Incoming freshmen who are relatives of Boise State alumni are eligible. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 or greater and an ACT score of 24 and/or an SAT score of 1090 or higher. An essay also is required from all applicants. Priority consideration will be given to applicants whose Boise State relative is a dues-paying member of the Alumni Association.

A printable version of the form is retrievable from a link on the Alumni Center’s website at alumni.boisestate.edu/programs/scholarships.asp. Donations can be made to the Alumni Legacy Scholarship by calling the Alumni Association at 426-1698.
