Boise State Named No. 2 in Academic BCS

For the second year running, Boise State has been ranked No. 2 in the Academic Bowl Championship Series, this year behind Penn State. The fifth annual poll from Higher Ed Watch tracks football players from the top 25 BCS-ranked schools who enroll as freshmen and graduate within six years. Scores reflect how these football schools would stack up if academics decided a team’s BCS ranking.

The ranking formula uses federal graduation rates and academic progress rates (APRs) to determine which college football programs are keeping academics as a priority for their players. The formula takes into account academic success both in relation to other football teams and to other students at the school.

Boise State’s final score was 107, 10 points behind Penn State and well ahead of athletic championship contenders Alabama (ranked No. 5) and Louisiana State (ranked No. 13). TCU ranked third and Stanford (No. 1 in last year’s poll) came in at No. 4.

Boise State also is ranked in the top 10 athletically, coming in at No. 7. Penn State is No. 22.
