MariahHerbeck100x125Mariah Devereux Herbeck, associate professor of French in the Department of World Languages, authored a book titled “Wandering Women in French Film and Literature: A Study of Narrative Drift,” published by Palgrave Macmillan. In the book, she examines the phenomenon of ‘narrative drift’ through in-depth analysis of 20th-century films and novels. Combining feminist theories and structural narratology, she illustrates the ways in which evidence and/or admissions of doubt by narrative entities in works featuring wandering women disrupt conventions of continuity, coherence and authority and thereby force the story in new, unexpected directions.
