Isaac Castellano authored a paper that was published in the September edition of International Journal on World Peace. The article, “Peace Through Partnership: IGO Membership and Military Spending,” examines the role international intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) had on military spending rates between 1965-2000.

The results show that IGOs with a security focus actually increase military spending, while non-security IGOs decrease spending. Castellano’s argues that IGOs serve as an additional source of information gathering for states and can increase cooperation with other states that are members. However, security IGOs increase the burden on military spending.
