School of Public Service to Honor Bruce Newcomb, Betsy Russell

By: Cienna Madrid   Published 12:17 pm / May 1, 2017

Boise State University’s School of Public Service will honor former Idaho Speaker of the House Bruce Newcomb with the second annual Commitment to Idaho award at a reception and ceremony from 4-6 p.m. May 9 in the Alumni and Friends Center on the Boise State campus. Last year’s honoree was U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson.

A lifelong rancher from Buhl, Idaho, Newcomb served in the Idaho House of Representatives for 20 years. His leadership roles included caucus chairman, majority leader and eight years as speaker of the house. A member of the Idaho Hall of Fame, Newcomb currently serves as special assistant to Boise State President Bob Kustra.

“Bruce Newcomb exemplifies commitment to Idaho,” said School of Public Service Dean Corey Cook. “Throughout his career as a rancher, legislator and at Boise State, he has worked to make the Gem State a better place not only for his children and grandchildren but for all of ours. His commitment to public service, and especially to finding common ground that advances the public interest, is simply remarkable.”

Betsy Russell also will be honored with an award for Enhancing Public Discourse. Russell covers Idaho state government as Boise bureau chief for the Spokesman-Review. She writes the well-known Eye On Boise blog and frequently appears on Idaho Public Television’s Idaho Reports. She is president of the Idaho Press Club and serves on the board of directors of Idahoans for Openness in Government.

“Betsy Russell is the foremost chronicler of the state legislature and all things Idaho, and has elevated the public discourse through her prodigious writing,” Cook said. “Thomas Jefferson wrote that ‘wherever the people are well informed they can be trusted with their own government.’ This is Betsy Russell’s gift to the people of Idaho.”

Kustra and Cook will present the awards, which also will include three faculty and staff achievement awards. Complimentary parking will be available at the Alumni and Friends Center. RSVPs are encouraged. More information can be found at
