Monique Halgat and Natalie Newell presented their research on incorporating emotional awareness into academic advising, particularly with non-traditional student populations, at the 2017 University of Idaho Advising Symposium.

Halgat and Newell conducted their research with current students and some recent graduates of Boise State. Through the results of their student interviews, they found that emotional factors more than external factors influence a student’s college experience. Their presentation will apply their results to how advisors can employ emotional intelligence when working with students who may be experiencing one or more emotional barriers to their education.

The University of Idaho Advising Symposium is geared toward faculty and staff who advise students throughout the Northwest.
