Gautam Basu Thakur
Gautam Basu Thakur was invited to present a talk at a symposium on “Comparative Literature in Historical Perspective” organized by the Comparative and World Literature Program at the University of Illinois. His talk, “Comparative’s Intellectual Labor: The Extracurricular Other in the Era of Tolerant Pluralism,” focused on the limits of liberal representations of otherness and urged for examining how these discourses are underwritten by extreme racist and sexist prejudices. The symposium was held Sept. 12-13 and celebrated 50 years of the Comparative Literature Program and 150 years of the University of Illinois. Basu Thakur was one of only eight alumni invited on this prestigious occasion.
