The Idaho Governor’s Office of Energy and Mineral Resources recently awarded Boise State University’s Alumni and Friends Center with a State of Idaho Award for Commercial Energy Efficiency. The Alumni and Friends Center was recognized in the medium-sized commercial category for construction that demonstrates energy efficiency and reduces energy use intensity.

The 44,000-square-foot Alumni and Friends Center opened in October 2016. The building features a geothermal heating source, efficient energy management control systems and high-efficiency condensing boilers and heat pumps. The brick and glass facility also utilizes individual heat pumps that allow for controlled heat usage in unoccupied areas.

Constructed through private donor funding, the Alumni and Friends Center is home to offices for Boise State University Advancement, Boise State University Foundation and University Communications and Marketing.

Located on the east end of campus, it is a gateway into Boise State University. It is a place that recognizes and showcases Boise State’s history and traditions. In addition, it encourages the rekindling of lifelong friendships, ignites school spirit and creates future memories, said Lisa Gardner, executive director of the Boise State Alumni Association.

Allen and Dixie Dykman, Boise, lead donors to the center, said their support of the building is to give back to the university that has given them much during their education and subsequent careers.

“Boise State University is a special place to me, and contributed vastly to my business, my professional life and who I am today,” Allen Dykman said. “Public universities need private funds to be successful, and the Alumni and Friends Center serves as the bridge to our future, and our gifts to the university will hopefully inspire others to do the same.”

In addition to the state award, the center also recently was named in the “People’s Choice” category for 2016 construction projects highlighted by the Idaho Business Review.
