Russell Willerton edited a special issue of IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, a peer-reviewed journal devoted to applied research on professional communication, on the subject of plain language in the 21st century. Plain language is an approach to communication that centers on making messages easier for audiences to find, understand and act upon.

Co-editors are Natalya Matveeva and Michelle Moosally from the University of Houston, Downtown.
Willerton also coauthored the introduction to the special issue, “Plain Language in the Twenty-First Century: Introduction to the Special Issue on Plain Language,” with Matveeva and Moosally.
